Exceed connections slow over home network

I set up a solaris9 box that i will be using for development and have exceed set up on my main machine. connecting to the solaris box takes about a minute and is overall slow and choppy. any ideas why it would be so slow?

solaris box is a 2ghz xeon with 1gb ddr running a 18gb 15k hard drive
main machine is dual 2.8xeon with 1gb ddr

network is using switched 10/100 and systems are on same local subnet so im confused as to why it is so slow. i forwarded port 177 (or whatever the x port is) and tried connecting from work, shows the server as existing but no xwindow is started.

Ideas? thanks
