I'm at the point where i am installing win7. After this is done, at which time do I install virus protection. Win7 is a clean (custom) install from disk.

Preferably, before you go online. In this day and age once you're exposed to the web, without AV, it's a matter of "when" you'll get infected and not "if" you'll get infected.

This. As long as you do before connecting the network cable.

This means that I would have to get all the drivers and whatever else I need from another computer, and put it on a usb ?

Not necessarily. I would not be afraid to go online and get MSSE and install it. Then go back on line and get MalwareBytes. Your initial risk can be low if Windows Firewall is active, and you stick to Microsoft's download site.

Might be nice to have the win7 with the 1st update pak. Often this is better than downloading a few updates at a time. I reloaded Vista on one computer and it had over 100 updates. Sometimes the Virus Software can stop the updates from installing properly. Might also have to update to IE ver 9 and Abode Flash player etc.

Sometimes you can temporarily disable the virus software to allow certain updates to install, because the virus software loads and uses certain files that need to be updated. Some of the indexing database stuff will not update if your antivirus software is running.

If you dont disable the the virus software the dumb Microsoft Updates will try to install every day and keep failing and it will pester you to death every time you turn on your computer or log into windows.

I recently installed windows 7 (non SP1) and I didnt even do anything and I got hit by that sysguard crap. Couldnt run anything, not even task manager. All I did was go to amd (thru msn default page) to download the lastest drivers. Somehow in that process I got infected. This was literally 3 minutes after install was finished.

Of course I've seen many computers get infected with that crap even though they are running norton, avg, avast, etc. I think a computer just needs the latest updates for 99% protection from what's out there.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't really care.

When to install AV software? Never. Malwarebytes scan once a month and you're good to go.

Usually I just install it as soon as I can. Sometimes I have to go online to download it. I do have my computers behind a router so chances are I wouldn't just pick up a by connecting to the net.
