Exactly what does dll files do?

I don't know everything about them, but dll stands for something like "dynamic linked library". I believe they are files that other programs may have in common, and can be shared thereby saving space on your pc, since each program doesn't need a copy of their own. Programs like Space Hound can hunt down duplicates dll's and reduce wasted space on your hard drive.
