Exactly How Does SPAM work

Can anyone explain exactly why spamming is such a hot item for spammers? 99% of the junk I get isn't written well enough to trap a monkey, much less a person.

How do they make money sending millions of emails for $10 Rolex watches and Viagra? I never click the links so they may be trying to use a phishing tool. In 12 years of computing I've never known one person who tried to buy anything from junk email.

Phishing sites aside, exactly how or what does the spammer benefit from spamming?

It does work actually. People ARE really that dumb.
I know this guy that did some spamming for this referral link clicking site. He got thousands of people to sign up to his "make cash by surfing the net" punch line.

lol when I was ~15 I made a program that automatically surfed the net for you and clicked on the ad-bars every so often. They got wise and started looking for mouse movements, so I had to add a feature that would move the mouse around the screen. With 5 ad bar apps and running roughly 7 hours a day when I was at college, it earned about £15 per month from each. Of course, I never saw the cheques as the companies folded before long.
