I'm going to do the initial setup of the machine I'm building in a few days.

I'm planning of having three partitions, one for windows, data, then programs. I know there is a /f or /s switch I need to put in when I'm (later) formating C (the drive windows will be on) but do I need to make all the other drives bootable as well? What is the exact command I should use to do this? I'm sort of looking for "type in this line for three different times for the partition, this line for format..."

Also, refering to the portion of text from tweak3d.net below, after I create my partitions do I need to run fdisk two more times to format the other partitions? At that point will I still be running fdisk off of the floppy? Again I just sort of wondering about the procedure. Thanks a million.

Before you format your hard disk, you need to partition it. And unless you own a copy of partition magic or another such program, you are stuck with old, archaic Fdisk. At the A: prompt, type in Fdisk to go into the program. Create a primary partition (your C drive) using fdisk and then restart the computer. Afterwards, you will once again need to reboot. Once you have rebooted the computer, type format C: /s (the /s makes the drive bootable) at the A: prompt and go do something else for about half an hour while it formats. When it is done, we recommend copying the Windows "cab" files (located in the \Win98 directory on the CD) onto the hard drive. This will make the installation faster.

PS I also heard somthing about making a partition for the swap file since it improves performance and you can defrag it. How is that done and what's the story?

And while you're at it what does the audio cable out of a cdrom drive look live. I'm installing a 16x Pioneer DVD which says it has four stands (which I have) and then a CDRW who's instructions call for a two stand version.

Voodoo3 3500

SBlaster Live!

and uh...
2 firewire ports

So there!

First, go into fdisk. When asked if you want to enable large disk support, say yes. At the menu select option 1, and then option 1 again. It will then ask you how nmuch space you want to use for the primary partition, and put in 1/3 of the total MB available on your drive. After answering a couple of self-explanitory questions, you will be sent to the main menu again. Select option 1 again, but this time at the sub-menu select "create extended DOS partition". I don't remember for sure, but you may have to create a logical DOS drive before you create the extended DOS partition, but if you do it is fairly self explanitory (be sure to use all remaining space when creating the logical DOS drive). Then create a second extended DOS patition like the first one. Finally, be sure to set the primary DOS partition to active from the main menu before exiting.

I know that is a lot to take in, but it is really simple. Just take your time and read everything carefully, and you will be fine.
