Exabyte of disk space

I am working in a lab this week that has 200 Petabytes of disk space and nearly 1000 servers. And not a single bit of useful data on any of it, and not one single production clock cycle is run on any of those CPU(s). This lab will have over 1 Exabyte of storage by the end of 2006.

bit
byte
Kilobyte
Megabyte
Gigabyte
Terabyte
Petabyte
Exabyte
Zettabyte
Yottabyte

Yes, c'mon we need more details than this

Yup, we all wanna know why.

Sounds like a government project for sure. I have 1.5 terrabytes but we use it all to store video from 90+ cameras.

cool job... so you guys have all this fancy hardware and nothing to do with it...?
i'd put up some FS notices on Anandtech.... 😀

How much does Hotmail give for free accounts now? Last I knew it wasn't as much as Yahoo, who are giving 100MB of account space for free accounts.

All that space is just for testing the storage array's interaction with 3rd party software and hardware for qualification.

i've got a pretty stacked Symetrix sitting on my loading dock...it's been there for almost a year..it's not even plugged in !!!!!

just decomissioned a couple Clarrions from the Exchange team...goin to a warehouse in TX never to be seen again.

what a waste of nice equipment.

I am not going to post specifics ,but yes I am at one of their sites right now. We are building SANs to test some managment software.

3rd party hardware ?

I was just thinking that...

maybe it's the Fiber SCSI Interfaces in the Servers ? Or maybe the SAN switches are 3rd party ?

3rd party means not

the OEM "Original Equipment Manufacturer" -- ie 1st party

not a company making a app to run with the OEM hardware -- ie 2nd party

But a company that makes software to interact with the 2nd parties' software - in this case SNMP

Veritas? Oracle?
