EX470 Mediasmart with windows home server, USB to USB backup?

Through the WHS OS, can you create a separate area on the server that uses only USB external drives to secure data on other USB external drives, while still keeping other pooled SATA drives separately? That way I could use my existing USB drives in redundancy and all the media data on my SATA drives stays on SATA drives and can be transferred quickly.

If I understand your question correctly, yes, you can connect USB drives (or other local drives) to Windows Home Server without adding them to the drive pool. You can use the built-in (to WHS Power Pack 1) backup tool to make backups of your data shares to the USB drive.
