The sexual assault case against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was close to collapse on Friday, sources close to the case said, in a dramatic turnabout that could upend French politics again.

first off allow me to say that i hate rape and think anyone that commits said crime deserves a life sentence. having said that, i really hate the fact that in many places with just an accusation of sexual assault someone can be locked up with a steep bail, sans trial, his name dragged through the mud, released with a tracking device and if it all falls apart, ah well it sucks to be him.

we need to have a system in place where the people that investigate these crimes, the detectives, the prosecutors and even the judge that orders the imprisonment pending trial, are held personally liable when the make a mistake. at the very least they should be subject to lawsuits and possible criminal negligence charges, if they destroy someone's life over a lie.

The whole event sounded fishy to me. Like someone trying to remove competition. Even if it turns out to be a fabrication his careers probably screwed.
