Ive been using Ewido for spyware/adware for some time now. Its a awesome program. It seems that AVG "merged" (aka bought out Ewido) and then renamed it to AVG anti-spyware. I completely hate AVG antivirus. It sucks ass big time.

So how long do you think it will take AVG to screw up Ewido? I say 2 months.

Hmmm...I have been using the AVG Free Antivirus software for 4 years on several of my home computers and laptops. I even recommend it to friends and family. I have NEVER been infected with a virus on my systems since using it (and to be fair ...I am also an educated computer user so I know what to look out for to avoid infection). In my opinion AVG's antivirus solution is more effective than Norton and less of a bloated resource killer than both Norton and McAfee's solutions.

I have now started using the Ewido/AVG antispyware and really like it.

I would not say that, other than its low detection rate there is not much wrong with it. I highly doubt AVG will screw up Ewido, if anything this is a great merger, seems as if AVG is trying to improve on their weaker areas. Maybe this will improve their trojan detection rates in AVG antivirus.

I just got AVG a week or so ago (moved from Norton). Overall I like it and it uses alot less system resources than Norton did.

Well, after that I am uninstalling AVG from all of my PCs .. its crap.

Howza bout a little more advanced wording on why you don't like it? I just read a review on it in Computer Shopper and they love it, other than its granularity in reporting spyware. As many others in this thread mentioned, AVG does a fine job compared to others in the AV field.

Ewido went down the tubes when they released version 4 and took away the Trojan definitions and concentrated on spyware only.

AVG detection rate is horrible. And when it does a find a virus - good luck on removing it, it fails 3/4th of the time. Not to mention the interface is very very bad. You get what you pay for guys. A half gimped antivirus.

I personaly use Norton Corporate edition - I cant complain much about it. But if I had to purchase an antivirus i would pick Kaspersky, it is a very nice AV program.

I didnt make this post to talk about how good/bad AVG is. I made it to discuss the merger with AVG and Ewido.

"Ewido went down the tubes when they released version 4 and took away the Trojan definitions and concentrated on spyware only."

Are you sure? I use 4.0 and it catches trojans.

FWIW the new build of AVG has a new interface which doesn't look all that bad.

AVG's detection rate is as good if not better than Norton, and better than several others that are commercially available, so please give it a little credit. While it may be far from the 'best' it doesn't 'suck ass bigtime'. I'd rather use AVG over Norton, Trend, and McAfee (non-enterprise) any day. However IMHO since AOL Kaspersky is free there is no reason to even consider another antivirus if you're a home user. :)

Since you want to discuss the merger, Ewido already had mediocre detection rates when it came to spyware/adware/trojans. I only ran it after the preferred tools (Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, Spybot, A-Squared, etc) to see what it would detect. At least Grisoft is keeping it free. :)

kaspersky is hands down the best with NOD 32 a very close second
But NOD 32 has too many false positives
I also find Kaspersky annoying (paid version)
So after a long time, I now use AVG Pro, which is good enough, when combined with Zonealarm, FireFox and Thunderbird, and ProtectX
The AOL kaspersky is the free "lite" version which after all, may be the best leanest situation.
AVG (non free) for now has about 15 versions - http://www3.grisoft.com/doc/5/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Merger with Grisoft
ewido is now part of the Grisoft family. ewido users and customers can now also take advantage of the huge resources regarding threat research and support available from a world leading AV company.
Read the press release

ewido anti-spyware 4.0 has been replaced by AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and isn't available for sale and download anymore (under the old name). Instead, please try our new, highly improved version: AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5

"I also find Kaspersky annoying (paid version)"
Hows that? I find that Kaspersky has a very very easy interface to use. Everything is in a place thats easily accessable. It basickly updates itself, runs scans, and removes threats silently. Which takes all the work away from the typical stupid user.

I havent used AOL Kaspersky, but from what I hear - its not as good as the paid version.

"But NOD 32 has too many false positives "
Seems like NOD 32 has a better detection rate than Kaspersky(acroding to http://www.av-comparatives.org ) , although I havent used NOD 32. How do you know it has more false postives?

I find ewido very good. I can run Spybot, adware, and two different virus programs on some HDs I get and ewido will still find 25+ serious threats.

From what I hear the AVG Anti-Spyware doesn't compare well to Ewido Anti-Malware, which it was supposed to replace. I still use Ewido Anti-Malware, it's quite good.

BTW, the new AVG interface looks almost exactly like the old one :p
