Evolve Big Alpha Weekend

You also get a invite to the beta (?) this weekend if you participated in the Fall alpha.

If they have not improved the matchmaking times this close to release, this is a instant no-buy.

Yeah... although, I wish Steam wouldn't have downloaded the client automatically. With Comcast's fun bandwidth restrictions, I don't enjoy losing a 22GB chunk of data for a beta that I may not play. 😛

now I will admit I don't do alot of beta's but there is way to shut off auto updates on other games on STEAM its not in the beta part also?

You pay for this game upfront and then there's character DLC after that. How on earth do they expect the player population to be sustainable for a competitive game like this?

Well the most important thing is that it doesn't really split the community, as you can still play with/against people who have the DLC.

I assume that I could have turned it off, but I had no idea that it would just auto-upgrade and download. Maybe Steam could have a feature to restrict auto downloading to updates below a certain size? For example, I could put the limit at 1GB, and any update over that would still be listed, but you'd have to manually start it. It might be nice if you could also have a per-game setting for that.

Just played a few rounds and uninstalled. I wasn't impressed during the first beta, don't know why I would now. Just not my kind of game I suppose.

They need to do more than just improve matchmaking times for me to consider it. There are a number of things that definitely need improvement:

  • The monster needs to start out stronger, not a lot but a bit, than it currently does.
  • They need to give more objectives that matter to the hunters other than just "capture the monster" that provide potential opportunities for the monster to take one or more of them out. Not easily mind you but as it stands now all the hunters have to do is stick together and be co-ordinated and they'll win 99% of the time
  • They need to tweak the thunderdome timer. As it stands if you get caught early in the game as the monster it's pretty much over as long as you're stuck in the dome, especially if you get caught in an area where you have no place to hide.
There's a lot of other things that need to be addressed for me to consider this game. I like the idea but there are a lot of balance changes that need to be done because as it stands right now it's tilted heavily in favor of the hunters. Looking at my steam library it's there to pre-load so I'll probably do that and see what, if anything, has been changed this weekend.

Just played for a while and you are definitely right on the monster bit. I got my bottom beat very quickly when I was the monster; needs to be a bit stronger going in.

Game was ok overall, not super excited to fire it up again, but will try it again while I still have beta access.

I just played for the first time as a hunter and lost. It gave me the trapper class and was following the dog around the map and it took quite a while before it reached the monster who was already eating well I guess, but the first encounter was too early for him as he kept trying to get away but I managed to deploy that thunderdome thingie but it didnt really help because of all these cliffs he was able to easily evade us then got loose and was more running around all over the map then finally he started attacking the power thing in the middle and we tried to stop him but I guess it was too late now he killed us pretty easily.

It wasn't really fun because it was mostly just running around in circles trying to catch up to this thing and besides deploying the thunderdome it didnt feel like I had much to offer the group as harpoons were being fought off as soon as I could deploy them

This game is lame. I made it through the monster tutorial before realizing how bad it was. The concept of little dudes running around 1/50th of your size that are some how nearly immune to fire, boulders, mauling etc is just so non immersive. You can barely see them yet they are god like. The graphics are kind of nice and the monster control is ok, but it is just not fun.

Once you kill a hunter they enter skull mode. You have to spend about 20 seconds desecrating the body while the other hunters hit you before it is considered dead.

I forgot to mention. When they introduced the hunters I about spit out my beer. They shamelessly tried to knock of TF2. Even the hunter models were suspiciously close to TF2.

And the cherry on top, to just get the Day 1 DLC it is $100.

Man they need to make an Alien vs Predator game that's on an open battlefield like that. That is something I would be interested in, but this, this just doesn't work.

I guess nobody is playing? Just tried to play again and could not find a game; it searched for a server about 15 minutes without finding one so I just gave up.

Tried playing, game does not support Dx10 video cards.

Not to worry through, my new build has been ordered.

Believe me, you aren't missing out on anything revolutionary or amazing. Just your standard shooter with a human controlled monster involved.

Several twitch streamers like ABlindPoet title their feeds as "The Waiting Simulator" when they're playing Evolve.

Ah good. Was thinking something was broken on my said. Sounds like the game is broken instead. 🙁

I had no wait times and got in several games yesterday when I had the chance to play it. Its not what I expected, but I did have a little fun. If I spend more time learning the controls, instead of just hitting buttons like any other "fighting" style game I am sure I would do better. I was the monster everytime I played, so maybe thats how you get into games fast is to have your first pick the monster.
I won't preorder this,.. but will probably wait until its been out for a while and there is a steam sale. I can see where this game would be easier on a console with a controller (at least in my case).

no way its going to migrate the l4d community
game isnt bad, no way its worth $60 imo
wont have a 3rd of the staying power of l4d

I agree with you... because I was/am a hardcore L4D lover. The original just struck a nerve with people and is a great game. Part 2 feels a little rushed but is a lot of fun. I think people are ready for 3 now,.. and was hoping this game would fill that gap till it comes out but its in no way a shooter game like L4D. This is more of a button smasher fighting game in my opinion.

Yep, that's how it felt to me as well and really all it did was make me want to play L4D. Not that's it's a bad game per se, but it's not my kind of game.

I agree, its not a bad game, just not what I was expecting. Its to fast paced for me, more of a COD style run and gun, spray and pray. There needs to be a way to break up that tension, other then just having the monster run off but thats only good for a few seconds before the hunters are back on him.
