There's a new computer system in the planning which will have the following features:

* Instead of a clunky and stationary tower, all the crucial components like CPU, HD, keyboard etc. will be combined into one, single unit.

This will be a powerful computer for business and gaming, but at the same time will keep the computer mobile so it could easily be carried around if needed.

* They will get away from the modular concept of using different components, like graphic cards, sound cards etc. since this has always been good for introducing compatibility problems in the past. Instead, all the components like high-end graphics, sound, network etc. will be on board.

In case optional extras (like a bigger external HD etc.) are connected to the computer, no drivers are required since the system will auto detect all hardware.

* The system will be entirely and 100% quiet. There is no single cooling fan or similar in the system, the only noise is coming from the harddrive.

* Due to this intelligent design, the power supply can be kept rather small. The PSU is in fact external, it can be placed anywhere, hidden in a corner in the room etc. without interfering with anything. The PSU is noiseless as well, no moving parts, no fans.

* The hardware and all components of this computer will not need "drivers" anymore - it will all work out of the box.

* In a radical new way, the complete graphical OS will not have to be "loaded" from disk anymore but will be completely "on chip" and instantly available once the computer is turned on.

For the user, this means there is no such thing as boot time or sluggish OS performance since it's all realized in hardware "on chip"...and there is no such inconveniences like having to "shut down" the computer and other nonsense.

The computer will be incredible powerful, at the same time not much larger than a typical "multimedia keyboard".

It will be called "Commodore Amiga" and the release date will be 1985.

The future of the PC is the smartphone, actually. I predict that within 15 years, the smartphone will be the primary computing device for most people. It will have all the processing power most people need, and will wirelessly connect to docked stations when you are in proximity. In fact, the tablet will likely just be a touchable display for the smartphone, so that you just have one main hub device for all your computing needs. So, you sit down at your monitor, keyboard and mouse, and if needed, a wireless storage array, and it instantly syncs to your phone and the phone outputs the signals to the display, etc.

So, you'll have all your main stuff on your phone.

Of course, regular PCs will still exist for those who need much more power, but I'm pretty sure this is the way things are going.

I think a different future is to occur in 15 years time. Phones will not be the processing of this environment, mainframes will make a come back offering cloud based processing, so all a tablet or phone will do is open a win-term session with the cloud and repeat history all over again.

There is something to be said for having a keyboard. Even if it is a little qwrty keyboard like a chat phone would have. I have seen some little wireless keyboards like you might use with an HTPC that could be used with a tablet or a phone since they are wireless.

It seems like there is a war for TV's to take over computing. You need a screen to see what you are doing and some device to interact with it. In essence a tablet is like a tv connected to the internet. If we can just get all entertainment to be delivered over the Internet.
