I personally don't know much about the STi but I see quite a few of them on the road around here! Love the sound.. 😀 If anyone can pull up some reliable info for the STi to compare to this new 05 Evo MR it would be greatly appreciated! I've seen lots of people write the evo is better, seen the top gear episode where they compare an STi and Evo (and the old evo wins).. but I've seen many many things in favor of the STi as well, as well as people vouching for the STi.

Don't want to start any sh1t or flamefest, but hopefully this thread can remain peaceful and informative. Personally I see myself in an evo 2-3 years from now - hopefully something like the MR! 😀

STi >>>>>>>>>> Evo MR

I wouldn't touch a Mitsu after our first and only experience with their brand of utter crap except with a bat.

That off-center front license plate bracket on the Evo looks really stupid. If I lived in a state that required me to use it, that alone would be enough for me to choose the STi instead.

I suppose you would rather have it block the intercooler in the interest of being symetrical. 😛

Well, yes. And if the MR had a back that looked like the Evo VI it would look perfect!

Disclaimer: I own a Subaru STi.

Summary: The Evo MR will be the faster car, if/when it arrives.

Let's start by pointing out that these are both inherently economy cars. The Lancer and Impreza are each the lowest model in each manufacturers product line. Despite their pricetags in the $30k range, roughly $14k above the base model, both cars have merely adequate interiors. The vast majority of the price premium is spent on technology and go-fast-bits. And that's exactly why people buy them. They are shockingly fast little sedans. But they're a real pain in the butt as daily-driven cars. Every single crack in the road is transmitted to the driver and pass., there is minimal sound-deadening, so you get very familiar with the exhaust, tire and wind noise, 18mpg (typical) on mandatory premium gas. And the best part: You get more attention from the police than you really want. A lot more.

Engine: The STi wins in the power department off the showroom floor, but the Evo certainly has more potential for insane levels of power.

The Evo comes with a motor (model 4g63) that has ten years of aftermarket development experience. Getting 600HP out of this thing is not uncommon. Strong steel block, factory forged internals, front-mount intercooler, etc. Obviously, at this power level (300 HP / liter, equivalent to a 1700 HP Corvette), the poor thing isn't going to last 100,000 miles, but who cares?

STi: Let me back up a few steps and mention that both cars were initially developed/sold to 'homologate' (legalize for a racing class based on production cars, XXX cars of a similar design must be sold to the public each year) the designs for World Rally Championship (WRC) competition. The motors for WRC racing are limited to 2.0 liters. The STi's motor, at 2.5 liters, is only available on US (and Canadian) version of the car. While that's a good thing for making power, the motor is a built substantially weaker than the EVO. The block is aluminum (lighter but weaker than steel), the pistons are not forged (hyper-eutectic castings), etc. The engine computer also changed dramatically from previous (and current overseas) version of the STi, which is finally being resolved, so 'chip' upgrades are just beginning to be available. I'm seeing peak numbers in the 450hp range, and the pricetag for that was ugly.

Handling: The EVO has better handling. There, I said it. I've ridden in several and raced against a few more (at an SCCA Solo 2 autocross, not on public roads), and the EVO will outhandle my car. It's not dramatic, and you have to be doing STUPID amounts of cornering to notice. Driven on the street, where running out of talent in mid-corner might result in hitting a schoolbus or a few trees, you're just not going to drive hard enough to see a difference (unless you're suicidal).

Warranty stuff: Mitsubishi is struggling financially, and is in a cost-cutting frenzy. There are numerous reports of EVO owners having their warranties voided for engaging in any kind of competition. The dealers have been actually been known to pull out a stack of photos of your car at the drag strip, autocross, driving school, etc. No Warranty For You. Subaru is less hostile about how their cars get used and actually pay for a one-year membership to the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). Many Subie dealers will still void engine warranties for very obvious engine modifications, but it's a little less confrontational.

On a very-quasi-related note: Dodge is reportedly standing firmly behind their "Neon from Hell", the SRT-4. Dealer-installed upgrades to 300 HP, warranty repairs for snapped driveshafts (ok, half-shafts) caused by drag racing, etc. "Gee, It seems we didn't build that strong enough for your driving habits, here's a new one." That's causing a slight amount of envy from EVO and STi owners. This car is not much slower (in a straight line) than either an STi or an EVO, but costs ~$8k less. The downside is that there have been an abnormally high number of crashes, and Neons are usually totalled in a crash, so insurance rates are skyrocketing.

Looks: Both have huge wings, and scream "Rice Rocket!!! LOOK AT ME !!!" Tied.

The EVO MR: This was the original topic of discussion. This thing is going to be scary. Minor engine mods, moderate chassis tweaks, and an aggresssive weight-reduction plan. No air conditioning available, no power windows or locks, thin sheetmetal and glass, no radio, etc. Initial estimates are that over 200 lbs have been removed. If Mitsubishi stays out of bankruptcy and imports it here, it's going to dominate the STi on a track.

evo for sure...faster, sharper.

stiffer ride than the sti though..a bit more bumpy. i can live with that.

one could say the Sti is tame compared to the Evo

and the sti isn't really a very tame car at all... 😀

Lots of wonderful info in this post.

The EVO definitely takes to mods better than the STI does, and generating big, dyno proven horsepower is easier. The 4g63 is an amazing piece of engineering for the price, both in its potential and its stoutness. Intercooler placement, is of course, far better on the EVO.

Handling and weight, the EVO wins as well. It has better handling feel too, not just cornering capabilities. Turn in is crisper, and it communicates far better with the driver. Availability of aftermarket performance parts, both are good, but the EVO has the edge.

As a company, be careful of both. They both suck, but Mitsu, at this point, is definitely in a worse off place.

😕

Subaru is about as rock solid as you can get apart from Toyota/Honda/Nissan ....

From the racing/mod standpoint. Sorry for the confusion.

Don't think I could bring myself to get a Mitsu even though I like the Evo better. They are just way too shady as a car company.
