need a new phone... I have a Pre right now and it was my first real smartphone
I was leaning towards the EVO and don't think I'll miss the keyboard (I downloaded that hacked onscreen keyboard for the pre and used it a lot more), but then places like Yahoo rank the EPIC over the EVO.

any opinions?

Evo = high end last gen phone
Epic = high end next gen phone

Epic outclasses the Evo in too many ways to mention in a single post

I went Epic over Evo. Its largely preference though.

Screen - 4" SuperAMOLED (Epic) vs 4.3" LCD (Evo)
Size - ~14mm (Epic) vs ~12mm (Evo)
Keyboard - Landscape QWERTY (Epic) vs On Screen (Evo)
Software - TouchWhiz (Epic) vs Sense (Evo)
Processor - Hummingbird (Epic) vs Snapdragon (Evo)

Other than the processor, where the Epic is the clear winner, and the thickness, where the Evo is the clear winner, the other categories are all pesonal preference.

The EVO is actually 13mm thickness.
For a non-keyboard phone, its quite thick comapred to today's standard.
Because of my lust for the HD2, I was always quite fond of the EVO because after all, its an HD2 with Android but after playing around with it a few times now, I wouldn't get one.
Although its almost identical to the HD2, its thickness and added weight is a big negative for me.
And since I've gotten my hand on a Captivate, I hardly use my HD2 anymore.
The Captivate is thinner and lighter and it does make a difference.

I think the EPIC is better in everyway over the EVO except for 2 things.
- I don't like slide out keyboard. I have no use for it on a big touch screen smartphone. I'd rather trade it for thinness and less weight.
- I don't like the rounded design. I'd prefered a more square-ish device.
I wish Samsung had made the Captivate have all the features that the Epic have.

I think the fascinate (verizon) is what you are looking forward 'cept no front camera. Unfortunately both the fascinate and epic have limited on-board storage (vaguely I've heard this is to fix a bus issue that was causing slow downs but not sure if this is true).
-
Like you I would prefer a smaller phone that lacks the keyboard. Oh well maybe I'll go with the fascinate if it is more like the captivate (I can't stand the hump on the vibrant) and less like the vibrant but I would like a bit more internal memory.

Well, the Fascinate looks exactly like the Vibrant.
I just happenned to like the design of the Captivate better.
Another problem with the Fascinate is its a CDMA phone.
I travel oversea often so I like GSM phone better.

Man, simply amazing how quickly a brand new phone gets outdone.

Its just the market nowadays. Its pretty much a new cycle every 6 months but contracts are 2 years. Doesnt matter. Its like how computers were back in the day. Either get one now and be happy or keep on waiting.

the realy question is how well it will be adopted by the mod community. because honestly what makes one android phone better than another is how much the community (xda) starts developing for it. I mean saying looking at specs alone the moment was better than the hero, but the hero a year later is the better phone because the community that developed for it. I went with the moment initially because of specs, but traded out for a hero and its no comparison, CM6 on a hero is far far better than anything the moment ever had.

hoping the epic gets some solid dev going for it, because its what i'm eyeing at the moment but i'll give it a month or two to see what happens before I pull the trigger on it.

I don't need slider whit a four inch screen-ascreen size and swype takes care of that issue. What we left with is a nice phone with am awwsume CPU and screen.

But the downsizes of the love it hate OI that can be completely changed very easily

To me it boils down to an over sized phone with the long history of Samsung to cripple thei GPS chips for whatever reason just makes it a no go. I'll keep my EVO.
