Evil Within - mandatory 4GB vRAM requirement

This seems rather sloppy:

"Note: We do not have a list of minimum requirements for the game. If you’re trying to play with a rig with settings below these requirements (you should plan to have 4 GBs of VRAM regardless), we cannot guarantee optimal performance."

Recommended PC System Specifications

64-bit Windows 7/Windows 8
i7 with four plus cores
4 GBs RAM
50 GB of hard drive space*
GeForce GTX 670 or equivalent with 4GBs of VRAM
High Speed Internet Connection
Steam account and activation

How many cards actually have 4GB vRAM? Barring the just released Maxwell lite, Titan and some aftermarket ones and - ?

The R9 290/290X come with 4GB default.

But none of the GTX 6-series cards would have had anywhere near that level in stock configuration.

Ooops. AMD too, but even then the latest card, this is getting ridiculous. 50GB of space for what - a 15hr or so (or less) campaign? Don't tell me this is all uncompressed audio because consoles can't hack it. i7 in what is basically a stealth game? And no minimums to boot?

Oh no!

This is my most-anticipated game this year. 🙁 It saddens me to think that my poor little 7870 might not be able to hack it. But, such is life. Judging from the videos, the game looks incredible, so I guess I can't argue with that.

Eh. Who knows. Determining system requirements is not an exact science and publishers are usually off to some degree. I will wait for release to see what happens.

Edit: I suppose it's worth noting that I was able to play Wolfenstein: The New Order (a newer idTech 5 game) quite smoothly.

The complexity of scenes, models and textures are only going to increase. If the game needs 4gb of video ram and really excels in graphics then it will be worth it, on the other hand if the game needs 4gb of ram and it looks average to crap then it won't. We have had the odd few games that have needed between 2gb to 3gb of video ram, only natural that newer games are going to be more demanding.

You guys think maybe the PR dude got RAM and VRAM mixed up? I noticed it needs 4GB of normal RAM as well.

I bought a GTX 780 Ti about 5 months ago. All 780 Ti's only have 3GB. I should have kept my GTX 680 4GB and should have waited for the GTX 980. A few games recommend more than 3GB VRAM these days for Ultra settings. I can't justify selling my GTX 780 Ti if I won't get much for it and buying a GTX 980. I bought a GTX 780 Ti so I could max out the latest games for a 2 years but sometimes I think that a GTX 780 6GB would be able to use higher graphical settings in the long run than a GTX 780 Ti 3GB due to more VRAM and the way a few games are recommending more than 3GB VRAM.

Some people have been slating Titan users for paying over the top. I got mine well over a year ago and am glad that I invested in it. I think the lastability of the card is good with the extra 3gb compared to the 780ti. I use it for both gaming and 3d rendering, so for me it is good value for money.

wouldnt it be funny if it actually needed 4G vram and still was a crappy console port with no difference in IQ? Yes, that would imply a certain level of ... funny

Maybe they have different textures for console and PC. Maybe lower res textures on the console versions and much higher ones available for the PC version.

there is NO way it will have 4gb of vram as minimum. that would eliminate probably 90% of pc gamers right there.

Also VRAM isnt equal to VRAM due to different compression techniques.

Sounds like another type of Titanfall in terms of VRAM (and audio). It makes absolutely zero sense.

Also look at the game. 41GB installed. But need 50GB free. Its the exact same BS. Uncompressed audio and such. I doubt the game as a normal PC port would take more than 15GB.

Not BS at all. They explain it right there:

It’s worth noting that the 50 GB of space required is for the PC install. When the installation is complete, the game will take up ~41 GB of HDD space.

This is common when you have compressed files being downloaded for install and then the installation processes requires a bit more elbow room for decompression.

And how is it different from Titanfall? Uncompressed audio in WAV format and uncompressed textures as a simple data filler with no real purpose.

For their sake, I really hope recommended means max/ultra settings

Since it's the ID Tech 5 engine, perhaps the PS4 and Xbox One versions are using tiled resources

Let me guess, uncompressed audio in WAV format and uncompressed textures.

Sorry, that's not what I meant. I'm not talking about the audio or texture quality. I'm just talking about compressed/uncompressed install size in general; like when you download a game from Steam, it tells you the full install size (i.e. 20GB), but then when you actually download it, the compressed download size is only 10GB. After it finishes downloading, it then decompresses and installs the full game, which sometimes requires a little bit of extra breathing room on the hard drive. I was just trying to explain the 50GB/41GB discrepancy.

But yeah, I agree, for a game that requires ~40GB of HD space it better look and sound good. Judging from all the gameplay videos they have out there though I think it looks pretty great IMO.

Game has PS3 and Xbox360 versions. Don't fret.

So does Watch Dogs - and look how well it plays! Butter smooth! And don't forget Dead Rising 3 ("next-gen only") - superlative gameplay!

This is yet another sloppy fat port by the specs. Next gen is equivalent to unoptimized mess more like.

Yeah, calling BS. I warn all of you, do not buy this game. IIt's goning to be even worse than Watch Dogs optimization-wise.

I seriously doubt it. Any idTech 5 game is going to be optimized way, way better than any Anvil game (or whatever hacked-up version of the Unreal 2 engine Ubisoft is using these days).

Ubisoft Montreal's PC ports run like a stripper with AIDS. If The Evil Within is worse than that, I will be pretty shocked.
