How do I know that the universe has an uncanny ability to produce long-term equality?
Yesterday, my headphones broke. I don't mean they're destroyed, but they're unusable at the moment. They're a pair of Koss PortaPros. They have two plastic sliders that move along the two metal strips which comprise the headband of the headphones. The sliders permit adjustment of the bands for smaller or larger heads. Without these sliders, the two earpieces are not held together by their separate bands- the PortaPros would simply fall off your ears.
Unfortunately, that happened yesterday. As I took them off, the two sliders simply snapped. I suppose they were overstressed from collapsing and releasing the headphones numerous times over the years.
That was in the morning. So my iPod was relinquished to my backpack for the bus ride home from work.
Back up 9 years, when I first got the headphones. My dad scored two Canucks tickets through his company - he could only take me or my brother. But he would compensate whoever didn't get to go to the game. My brother was the bigger fan so I let him go to the game, and I opted for PortaPros. I have since been to games however.
I used them up until yesterday. They had endured part of high school, all of university, one and a half years of college, and now into the working world. A Walkman, Discman, and now iPod and late-night fragging solution. Deep bass and amazing sensitivity.
Last night, my dad called to say that he had won tickets to a Canucks game next week through a silent auction at work. And it so happens to be my turn to go to a game with my dad. I'm really looking forward to that.
Still, I loved those headphones. And the speakers still work perfectly on them. Whether I intervene by taking advantage of Koss' lifetime warranty, or by handyman intervention of patience and duct tape, I intend to get my PortaPros back in service.
I only hope I don't upset some sort of universal balance by doing so.
