I'm trying to OC my evga 7800 gt. I'm using rivatuner and its telling i can't go past 496 (mem i can get to 1220). Is there any way around this? I don't think temps are a problem, and if they're, can't i just up the fan speed for 3d power? Do i need to add more voltage to the card? how do i do that if i do? maybe use another program?

Here are my specs:
dfi nf4
3200+ venice
2gb ddr

496 is a very good overclock for 7800GT (+24%). Also your memory overclocked well too. I wouldn't bother with voltage settings at all. At these speeds, you should be more or less equal to a stock GTX card.

Your gpu overclocked better than most cards on Anandtech - 7800GT mini-roundup

So I'd be happy where you are and call it a day.

oh well. actually i dont really run those clocks... i just wanted to see how far i could take the card for fun.
thx for ur opinions though :)

edit: hmm, i wonder i an evga bios update would help? Is there a way to revert back afterwards if not?

I can only get to 470/1100. The default is 445/ 1070 . Id like to get a higher oc but anything above 470 doesnt stick. The memory can go a bit
higher but it artifact in bf2. Is this temp issue or does it have something more to do with the bios ? My idle temps are around 40-43 degrees.
But 496/1220 is really good. Wish mine did as well. Im thinking about getting the nv silencer.

Getting the overclock to stick at that setting is fairly easy. Running games without artifacts is the real test.

lol, yeah, it was just a matter of moving the bar. What is a good way to test for artifacts? i'm running 496/1200. i ran atitool for awhile and nothin came up, but when i had the mem at like 1240 i noticed some artifacts in 3dmark, which didnt show up in atitool. what are they caused by? Overheating?

Have you tried coolbits? I mean, I have a bog-standard 515 from them and coolbits detects 510/1200 as 'optimal' for overclocking and I don't get artifacts.

Not necessarily. You can get artifacts and even total system freezes without overheating your cards. It's just a question of trying to run the graphics core and memory at a faster speed than its actually capable of given the type of graphic information its being required to process.

Cooling your cards will help, but I've overclocked my cards too far on a number of occasions and temps had nothing to do with it. Last night I was trying to push my 7800GTs' memory as far as I could playing F.E.A.R. and I got a total system lockup. When I restarted the system and checked my card temps less than five minutes later, they weren't even at 55C.

Oh and Hikari, the optimal settings in coolbits is a good place to start, but you can usually push your card further manually. At the same time, the detected optimal frequency in coolbits on my system results in artifacts in F.E.A.R.
