During CES, we have spoken to several EVGA representatives regarding the company's recent marketing plans and ideas. In our discussion, the company revealed two prototype PSUs that it has been considering for the retail market.

That's awesome. If the reviews go well then I hope they come out with a larger line. From 500 up to the 1000. More competition is always good.

They're saying 120A on +12v, but I can't see that as a sustainable combined rating.

120A x 12v = 1440W

1440W x 1.2 (for 80% efficiency) = 1728W from the wall

120v (typical AC) x 15A (typical household breaker) = 1800W

That's cutting it close, let alone a couple watts for 3.3v and 5v.

I think there has been huge wattage PSUs before, but they've needed two outlets (presumably on two circuits).

Not only what Zap mentioned, but suppose it has particularly good 90% efficiency. That's still ~160W of heat needing to be removed, quite a lot for anything remotely resembling a PS2 form-factor even if it's a little bit longer than that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you need THAT much power you are better off with a full tower case using two PSU. It's not only that this (ideally, but not really) halves the heat per PSU, it's also that it doubles the airflow. The other good alternative is to depart from the PS2 form factor and buy a server grade, larger form factor PSU.
