EVGA Step Up FYI... GT to Ultra

I have an EVGA 6800 GT and recently submitted my request to step-up to the Ultra model (seeing as there will be no fall refresh 🙁 ). After sending my request online I received this message below. Now that my order has been finalized (sending my GT back on Monday)... I thought I would let you guys know there are some Ultras available! 😀

eVGA.com is happy to announce that your Step-Up for the e-GeForce
6800 Ultra is now ready to finish processing. Due to the demand for
this card you will have till close of business day on October 4, 2004
to process your Step-Up request. After this date you will need to
resubmit your request for the Step-Up if you still wish to upgrade to
the e-GeForce 6800 Ultra.

Please go to
http://www.evga.com/stepup
to finish the process.

NOTE: Please do not post this information as it may reduce your
chances of getting your Step-Up processed due to the limited quanties
available.

EVGA has Ultras (not available on their website, only to step-up).... The sucky news is that moving from a 6800 GT to an 8500 DV 64 Mb while waiting on a new card really sucks!

I can game in BF 1942 but the card is soooo slow. Take this into consideration before steping up, you may experience extreme withdrawl. 🙁

I would do it but honestly the card(6800 GT) runs every game crystal smooth at the resolution I want.
No need to spend more 😉

LOL... I made sure to secure my order before posting. I figured that now that I have my Ultra on the way I could spread the wealth with AT community! This 8500 is so slow now 🙂

Good Karma 🙂 Glad to see you went through with it. Don't let anyone bum you out either, it's a big honkin' mofo of a graphics card and that is schweet IMO. Heck, I had a 5800u so you know I can dig on a massive chunks of copper that roar like a 60's muscle car 😎

Hey Punisher,

Thanks for the kind words. I hope this one isn't as loud as that 5800  My GT just didn't overclock as great as everyone here would have your believe. Far Cry would slow down quite a bit when gaming maxed at 1600 x 1200! I'll let you guys know if I have any problems (I didn't send back my free far cry as the promo was only through September). I didn't want to return the game that I bought this baby for 😛

Could your card have been clockthrottling due to heat? Also, did you try the latest dets? They seem to help a little. Anywho this way you don't have to overclock to get what you are after, and the step-up shows it's pretty sweet 🙂 You get to test drive for 90 days then get the souped up model without losing any value on your current model by driving it off the lot so to speak

It's quite possible.... I'm not much of an overclocker. I had never overclocked until my first computer build in August. I am running my 3800+ at 2.5 without any problems. Coolbits said my GT would run at 425. Whenever I overclocked very much I would get severe slow downs in Halo (free game I wanted to beat, came with the sound card) and Far Cry would freeze for 5 seconds then work for 15???

How do you turn off the clock throttle? I want to see how fast my Ultra will go this weekend! Is there a better way to check temps than, after closing a game, going to the Nvidia window and looking at the temps as they are dropping?

The step up is the best offer I have ever seen! If it weren't for that program I would still be waiting for an XT PE 😛

Sure sounds like you were either clock throttling or general overclocking related instability given the slowdown when heavily overclocked. To montior temps in game I think you need dual display but I'm not certain. If the bios tweaking utilities allow you to disable clock throttling I still wouldn't because that would be pushing for a fried card, it's a safety net of sorts, though it fails to save some evidently from posts I see here.

Thanks for the input. That is exactly why I have tended to stay away from overclocking, I'm no expert and don't have the cash to blow $400 - $500 for a few frames! I'll keep everyone posted when I get the new card. EVGA should get my GT today (overnighted yesterday). I should receive the card Friday / Saturday!
