eVGA RMA replacement questions.

My 8800gts in my 2nd and aging rig had died (purchased in May 2007 for $350).
Good thing I registered the card way back when.
eVGA has now provided RMA info and everything else needed to return it. And I just shipped it back today.
Here are my questions...
1) What would eVGA send me a new or refurb card in return?
a. Would it be another 8800gts?
b. Or if 8800gts is no longer available then what would be a comparable card in today market place as a fair value considered the amount I paid four years ago that eVGA may send me?

2) Will the replacement card can no longer be registered for lifetime warranty like its predecessor?

1) you will get the comparable market priced card that is available today since the 8800gts is EOL for a while.
2) You can register the new card for warranty if they send you an AR. If you get an XR card (the last 2 digits of the model number) you have 3 years.

When I had to RMA a motherboard to them when it fried near the front panel connectors, I got a brand new motherboard sealed in the box.

1) You will be sending them a used card, so do not expect a new one in return.
a) It would be the exact replacement card if they have any on hand. If not, it would be an "equivalent" performance level.
b) You are buying a performance level, not a price level. Thus, your replacement card will be equal in performance and not in price. Otherwise they can give you some crap like a 7900 GT and say "you got your dollar value because that card used to cost the same." ***
2) The replacement should carry the same warranty as the original. For instance, if original was lifetime then replacement is lifetime. If original had a 3 year warranty and you have 1 year left, the replacement will have 1 year left.

*** Frankly, I see this line of thought posted on forums quite often and IMO it is full of, ahem, fallacy. For instance if your 5 year old car got totaled, your insurance would give you the value of what it is worth today and not what you paid for it.

Okay so I'm hosed basically in terms of fair value market price.
So a 8800gts performance = a 520?

The original one? Maybe, but given that the 520 has half the shaders (DX11 and higher clocked or not) and a much narrower memory bus I think you should expect at least a DDR5 430...

good grief no. a 520 is slower than even an 8600gt. even a gt430 would be slower than any 8800gts.

enlighten me, is 8800gts < 8600gt?
why would you think an 8800gts would be slower than an 8600gt?

you need to list your exact 8800gts model if you ant to get an accurate idea of an equivalent card.

Its a 512mb version as far as I can remember.
I have no idea what 8600gt is or was.

well its easy to figure out that it would be slower than the 8800gts though. they are both from the 8 series and the second number indicates level within that family. for example the 9600gt is slower than the 9800gt.

the 8800gts 512mb was the best version of the 8800gts cards. a gts250 would be slightly faster. a gts450 would be faster too.

The 512mb version didn't come out until 2008. That's much faster, though. EVGA has been known to give basically upgrades, so you might end up with a refurb 450 or something... though probably not.

unless they just happen to have some older cards, the gts450 would be the most likely.

I will know for sure about two weeks from now of what eVGA sends me.
Whatever it is, probably just enough to play games that are just as old as the card itself.

What? No. Whatever card you get would likely be worth at least what your card is worth... TODAY. Not what you paid for the card years ago, but what it would fetch if you were to sell it off today. Again, that probably has nothing to do with how they determine what they send you. So, if you were to realistically think about "fair market price" you will likely break even.

Basically, you need to get your mind off what you think your crap is "worth" because if you (or any of us) want to think about that, then we will soon be depressed over how much we spent on stuff and what it is worth today.

Example: Couple months ago I sold off my two "now crappy" GTX 285 graphics cards and upgraded to two GTX 560 Ti. Would you want to guess what I paid for those two GTX 285 (back when they were top of the line)? Would you want to guess what I sold them for? o_O Uh, yeah, let's not think about depressing stuff like that.

So, stop obsessing over how much money you spent because it has NOTHING TO DO with warranty.

If they send you a crappy card, and you just want a card for basic gaming, HD4870 512mb for $54 is a good card for occasional gaming and is at least 50% faster than what you had.

They ought to offer warranties that you can pay for that will give you a new rather than refurbished card. However, I'm sure they have a good reason not to since they don't.

Geez, just a little rant and you're making a big deal about this.
Of course I understand the law of diminishing of return as I'm an audio trader myself.
BTW just let this thread DIE!
