eVGA RMA = Another bad Card

WEll, ive had my new card(RMAed), 7900GTX, which is boinked also. Exhibits the same problems as the other one except the artifacts are a little different. I checked my volts, fine, and i checked my temps, fine again. It crashes in 3dMark 06 still, i have to hard re boot to get the system back up. I am going to ask for another RMA and if that fails, well we will see.

WTH is going on with eVGA? If I remember correctly, they had an issue with their 7800GT's with a BIOS problem and it was widespread. The GTX's were fine for that series. I know, I had one. But damn. This is the second time in a short period where eVGA had some major screwups. I dunno what's happening with them.

Hope your next card works out, but it don't look good.

Well, theres many threads on this now.... And a few statements from nvidia and evga.

The 7900 series cards have faulty voltage regulators I guess. Its because of how high evga and xfx clock their cards. BFG has much lower failure rate because of how low they are clocked. Obviously evga clocks theirs highest, thus, they have the highest problem rate.

Although, they are supposedly shipping new modified cards that fix the issue now they stated. If you compared an early 7900 card to the newer modified one, you can infact see they made some changes on the back. That has me stumped if people are still having issues.

Power issues can cause artifacts, other than that, probably just bad luck.

As others have said, even on the defective stepping of the cards (which has been corrected on the newest cards) the failure rate was very very low.

Double check your system configuration. Getting a bad card from an e-tailer is one thing, and getting an RMA from the manufacturer is another. Any reputable company would make sure to send out a good (or better) product for replacement. That was my experience so far. OCZ practically sent hand-picked modules to me (see sig), and BFG sent me a 7800GT when my 6800GT died. The quality control on RMA should be tougher, if anything. I'd be surprised if eVGA really send multiple defectives through RMA.

Again, the chance of getting multiple bad luck via RMA from reputable company is quite low. Products will go through extra testing before shipped via RMA.

WAIT.

OP: Did you RMA through eVGA, or through a retailer you purchased the original one from? If it's done through the retailer, the situation becomes more realistic (i.e. opposite) since they might have received bad batches of cards and have them in their inventory. In that case, yah, you can get defects repeatedly.

Yeah, i didnt think about that, was the RMA through Evga or an eTailer?

During the 5900 days, I had to RMA a BFG 5900nu directly through BFG. They sent me a bad card. Fortunately, after the 2nd RMA, they sent me a 5900ULTRA! 😀

That was a nice surprise from them. So, it is possible to get a bogus card from the manufacturer if their quality control is not up to snuff (disgruntled employees, college students who just don't care, etc. etc.)

Many people got multiple bad rma cards from EVGA while they were still figuring out the problem however this for the most part ended about a month ago. My RMA is going on 3-4 weeks overclocked with no problems.

The problem is not fixed, it's not evga's fault as all the boards for all the companies are built at the same place in china, and it's not limited to just the overclocked cards. Any doubts, check the evga forums. There's plenty of proof over there. I've gone through 3 7900GTs that didn't work at NVIDIA STOCK speeds. They had to be clocked way under stock @ about 400 (on the memory) to function normally.

Yeah ive seen a few people who have the superclocked cards that have gone through 5 or 6 RMA's already. Not sure how thats possible. Id almost have to blame that on the user but....I am definitely waiting a while before I grab myself a 7900 card.

They also had a big BIOS issue with their 7600gs that I had to fix for them. Just an incompetent company if you ask me.

Again, its not just EVGA. The only reason it seems like it is they sell way more cards than BFG, XFX, etc.. Oh, and at least they kept their forums open after this problem came up. Unlike XFX.

I have one of the first 7900GTs from Evga here and its fine. Also have my BFG 7900GTX which is fine as well..

sucks to hear you are having issues.. you really need to get on the phone and complain alot. If you know of a girl or someone who is very good at being a b*tch vocally have them do it for you.

I had a bad one, Cross Shipped and recieved a new one...works volt modded @1.4v and 2.2 for about 80days now just perfectly. However I can fry an egg on my voltage regulators >.> prior to heatsinking it.. (only recently heatsinked it)

the card is hit or miss reguarding the voltage regulators but im positive that is the problem.

EVGA is very very cool tho. Just call them, tell em the card is qwerky and ask for cross shipment.

You pay nothing (as in not a dime...for shipping both ways or anything), they wont hastle you...and you will recieve a new card.

For that alone I am an EVGA customer for life ^^;

However I can confirm many instances of the 7900gt~ series being bunked.

keep tryin until u get a good one D: its free to do so...

How many can you confirm (links are always good)? eVga says 0.04 to 1.9% of the 7900GT's RMA'd since 5-30-06. See here in the evga section, update 5/30: http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTA2OSwyLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

Obviously 0% would be better, but that's pretty low return. Not trying to cause trouble here, but factual info is, well, factual info.....
