EVGA nForce 590 SLI power question

The board's got an 8 pin power connector that I've never seen before. The website only says the board may become unstabe without it connected. Is this true? Has anyone used the board without it?

Nm...I found out the board will work with just the extra 4 pin connector. Unfortunatly, my 500 watt PS smoked shortly after plugging all the drives in. Oh well, off to Frys tomorrow.
