I'm doing a piece by piece build with hopes of having the system done in about 30 to 45 days. I've already got my case and my EVGA NF68-A1 will be here tomorrow. Next I plan to get RAM but I'm not sure what speed I should get because this board supports DDR2 533 through 1200.
The main focus of this rig will be gaming. I'm not a TOTAL noob to overclocking but I am new to overclocking an Intel. My last high end machine was an Operton 170/Asus A8N32-SLI rig but I sold it shortly after building it to buy a motorcycle. I was able to get a 25% OC with that rig and could've probably went much more but my Lian-Li PC65 case wasn't the greatest when it came to heat management. Anyway, I kinda remember the ins and outs of overclocking but I wanna make sure I have enough headroom to overclock this new machine. BTW, my new computer will have a Q6600 in it.
DDR2 800 seems to be the most popular RAM right now as well as the most affordable in terms of speed. Is DDR2 800 good enough for this machine or do you think I should go faster than that? AFAIK, this NF68 board allows you to isolate the FSB and RAM speeds so I'm not sure if I even need to worry about getting some super fast RAM or not. Because if I remember right, typically when you increase the FSB you also increase the RAM speed but since this board allows you isolate the two, having super fast RAM to accomodate the increased FSB shouldn't be an issue should it? Even if I couldn't isolate the FSB and RAM I can always use a divider right?
Brand/Model suggestions as well as speed reccomendations are more than welcome. In that Opteron rig I had Corsair XMS DDR400 and it seemed like great RAM. Howver I paid 300 for 2 x 1GB back in December of 05. Looks like I can pick up 4GB of DDR2 800 XMS, G-Skill, or OCZ for under 250 at the Egg.
Thanks for any info you can share.
