I am supposed to be doing a build tomorrow using the 7800Gt and free motherboard deal from newegg with a Thermalright XP-90 HSF and just found out that the backplate on the motherboard is incompatible with the XP-90.

A) Does anybody know if the backplate that came with my Asus A8V Deluxe will fit (I swapped it off when I installed my Zalman cooler).

B) A store that sells them in the Southern Rhode Island area.

Help!!!

I dunno about the backplate on your A8V, but here is what I did with my XP-90:

Take the stock XP-90 screws with you and go to Home Depot/Lowes, any place that has a good selection of machine screws, washers, and nuts.

Pick yourself up some of the same diameter screws, or near it, but make sure they're longer. I don't remember what length I got; just get two diff lengths to make sure you don't have to run out again. Also get some nuts that fit those screws and washers to go with it.

Put the XP-90 bracket on, insert new screws, and attach with a washer on the backside & tighten up with a nut. To ensure proper load balancing, I would loosely tighten each nut, then securely tighten them. Don't tighten too much tho. Worked great for my XP-90 & eVGA board :)

EDIT Also, underneath the eVGA backplate you'll see there is a little cutout part to go over a pack of resistors that is under where the CPU is. Your other backplate might not clear those resistors, so be careful if you go that route.

Thats a great idea. I have a home depot about 10 minutes from my friends store where I was planning on building the computer anyway. I would guess an addition 3/4" should do it but would probably grab a pair of 1/2" longer screws too. I will post what size screws work once I know (if I go that route and don't use my A8V backplate, which I migth not do because of this idea).

Edit: Thanks for brighening up my day. About 45 minutes ago the terinal I was working on decided to start smoking on me. Luckily I had a spare. This was just being a nail for todays coffin.

I know what you mean man. I got my board and had the Venice & XP-90 all ready, then I saw that stupid cheap ass plastic backplate :| At least you figured out how to get those stupid plastic pins out, took me a while :p

How did you do it? I haven't done it yet. From what I heard you use a screwdriver to push the pins up from teh bottom.

Since we finished this convo via PM, I thought I would confirm for everyone that you do indeed just push the pins up from the bottom. Needle nose pliers, small screwdriver, just need something long & thin to push the pins out.

Tell me how it goes. I'm thinking of getting one too...

I found the backplate online but it wouldn't help me for putting the computer together today. eVGA should sell a standard backplate amongst their accessories...

1) Flip the motherboard over
2) Take a small flat head screwdriver and push the center portion of the pushpin upwards. This is the locking piece.
3) Using your fingers, pinch the outside edges of the pushpin together and push it in.
4) Flip the board back up and pull the pushpins out using your fingers.

You are done.
The screws I used are #6 by 3/4" long although #6 by 7/8" would have been better. The home depot near me didn't have any M3 screws which would have matched the exact type as sent by ThermalRight.

I don't know about anyone else, but I bought the combo recently and the yellow back plate was all I need. I use the shorter 2 screws with the XP90 and screw it on the black retention bracket from the XP90 and all is fine. I guess the older revision boards come with the push pins bracket?

Thanks.
