Looking at the shorter 4gb version for a bedroom htpc build. I would like it to play 4k video and super light gaming at 1080p.Its mainly for watching Netflix HD and Blu-rays since we cut our cable.Would this be a cool temp and lower power solution or do I need to get something better?I was thinking 750ti but benches are showing its maybe 1-3 fps better then the r7 260x that I have now.
If you're going to do 4k video playback, the 960 is the only discrete GPU that can do that all in hardware right now.
It does require a single 6-pin. I believe the r7 260X requires one as well so that shouldn't be a problem.
Really that's the best option for your use case. More and more content is going to be 4k h.265 and without hardware decode you'll wind up being crippled on newer videos. At this point in time the 960 is superior to every other card out there in that regard, regardless of price.
The only question is 2 or 4gb. More and more I'm seeing where 4GB makes a big difference on minimum FPS / dropped frames.
Might want to wait a week and see if the freebie game Metal Gear Solid V is included with the 960.
