EVGA GTX770 Overclocking Changes

I have an (I'll post Amazon's total title because of the different varieties out there so there's no confusion.) "EVGA GeForce GTX770 w/EVGA ACX Cooler @ 2GB". Great card, replaced a GeForce GTX580.

I've noticed with this card - as all of you guys already have - (all of the newer ones too, I suppose), that overclocking - instead of directly setting your desired clock speeds, you now do it through a "Power Target". I use EVGA Precision. Is there any way to go back to the "old" direct method?

Maybe I'm becoming a luddite lol, but I'm having trouble getting used to, and understanding the new method. How is it superior? How does it decide when, how, and how much of my requested targets to apply? Am I getting what I'm asking for, and how do I know?

Thanks guys - I did search and didn't see anything that satisfied all my concerns. Much appreciated - as always.
