So from all the various reviews and owner observations it seems the top end overclocks are generally somewhere around ~2-2.1GHz be it custom or FE 1080(at least for now).

Yeah, but you won't maintain those clocks on FE cooler without a custom fan profile that can get noisy. Seems like the aftermarket ones are cooling better, not sure about the noise yet but I would anticipate it is much lower as that is 99% of the time the case with the aftermarket multifan coolers

I'm not sure where the noisy meme is coming from. The fan on my FE is by FAR the least noisy of any blower fan unit I've ever used. I run at near 100% all the time and I can't believe how quiet it really is. Other units have sounded like leaf blowers at 100%, but this one doesn't.

Everyone has a different standard as to what is loud to them. For some 30DB is to loud, for others anything above 60DB is to loud. Personally, I run scythe ultra kazes 120mm's, 4 of them at full blast. Noise is no issue lol.

Noise kinda depends on your environment and relative DBa of the rest of your system. Loud room/loud rig, GPU fan noise no big deal. Quiet room/whisper rig...well you get it

I will without a doubt put my 1080 under water. Just have to wait and see if more options release.

Dookey, how do you like the transition from your R9 290 to the GTX 1080?:)

I had 2 R9 290s in CF and "under water" in my 4790k rig and they were solid cards.

It was an excellent upgrade. My 290 is still doing duty as a distributed computing cruncher. My 1080 is of course much faster and much quieter. I'm glad I have gsync back as well. With that said the 290 was a great card other than the noise. At the right price it's still a great option for many people. No regrets with either card.
