EVGA Classified SR-2

Not sure what's worse... the size of the thing or the fact that at least one person here will end up buying one.

wow. Huge board. Nice to get a server board that supports OC though. I assume it supports westmere hexcores?

ya thats what I meant. I think gulf town is the desktop version of the chip. Idk if that is also considered a westmere, MB. Basically, you need a xeon with dual QPI right?

But... but... my friend, who knows everything about computers, told me that every process needs it's own thread... So I *need* this board so I can open more than 3 browser windows while playing my game... right??

...would it help if I misspelled more? :sneaky:

I want one! I could probably scrape together the money for the board.....but populating all those sockets and slots....ouch!

i thought this was going to be the dual socket i7 board that was mentioned a couple months ago... but.. xeon it is... still a sweet board though

I think normal Core i7 doesn't support dual sockets, thus the need for Xeons.

BTW they got the E-ATX size wrong. I think they just used the size from their own board, but they shouldn't state it as the size of a standard.

The funny thing is there are a bunch of folks over on EVGA's forums just waiting to buy one. One dude who is retired said that he is spending $10k on a rig build and something about having other pensions to take care of him? Insane in my opinion.

Awesome power though for sure.

I had thought that i read that they were going to use 2 x58 chips to get around that... so in a since it would have been like two mb on one pcb.. oh well

I would assume/hope the only people buying this are those with a large amount of disposable income. Anyone that spends a disproportional amount of their income/savings on an SR-2 based PC for gaming is a fool.

Imagine if you made $75k a year and spent $10k on a Skulltrail system 18-24 months ago, only to see it lose in performance to a $2-3k system today, that is what I was getting at referring to the dude spending pension money on a $10k SR-2 build. Dumb.

Actually its not that bad of a price
Board $600
Two 5520 $800
Bare minimum two 6 gig ram packs for 12 gigs total $300 (by looking at the board I would guess the 6 slots by each cpu socket would operate just like any other 1366)

So that is $1700 which is a lot. You'll need a certain case for sure, so probably another $200 or so. But honestly for $2000 that base setup would enter a zone beyond anything you would see in 3-5 years. Nothing would touch it.

Spectacular looking board as well.

I could see spending $4k to build a nice system based on that, if I had the xtra cash. That's actually not too bad.

I agree the price point doesn't seem too bad at all....Not like I'd buy it tho.

I'm sure many a fool have plopped down more at best buy for a much, much weaker system 🙂

Skull Fail 2 is born, eh?
Server product this is NOT. (Rule 1 of servers is we don't overclock servers!)
Price is OK for what it is.
Hopefully it has the better NIC pair that the 4X SLI has.
Big thumbsdown on the fan!
