This is the cooler they should have used in the first place. It's more or less and EVGA 8800GT with a GTS 512MB Dual-Slot Cooler slapped on it. Seems to me if you wanted that, why not buy a GTS 512MB??

Base Model $269 - http://www.evga.com/articles/393.asp

** Or you could just buy the 8800GT to GTS 512MB Converter Kit for $40. ** :D  :D

** Yes I know the GTS 512MB has more Shader Processors **

At $270 it's too expensive, there were G92 GTS deals that were less than that. It can be appealing if they drop the price though.

actually this is exactly what i have been waiting for. assuming the fan isn't loud at full load, it's perfect for my game machine.

and it's two versions:
-stock speed with the dual slot cooler (for low noise i assume)
-akimbo speed for bragging rights, with dual slot cooler (to keep it from melting.)

If I didn't have my 8800GTS already, I would say that's nice. I think I'll get that for my friend. He already has an 8800GT SLI setup and I gave him my 8800GTS cooler and with one AKIMBO cooler, he'd stop b**ching about how hot they get.

I might give that Kit a shot. Slap that on my G92 8800GT and see how much better it performs...

yeah, I saw that earlier today, it's actually $265 shipped. That would be a tough deal to pass up, especially for someone with noise/heat concerns vs the base 8800gt. I don't know, though, I think I could figure out a way to get the base fan to work properly for $50 less on that msi OC unit for $215 shipped.

Is this why the SSC and superclocked models of EVGA's 8800GT have been missing from Newegg?

I'll get that Akimbo cooling kit just so I can use the backside cooler w/ my Accelero.

As far as I know most 8800GT's will hit akimbo speeds or higher with relative ease once a better cooler is installed. For example my 8800gt with duorb installed runs at 740/1835/1000. And I know quite a few other members on this forum hitting similiar speeds.

The cooler is nice, but factory overclocked cards are not worth the price premium at all. Good card companies cover overclocking in their warranties so you're better off buying the cheap stock speed one and overclocking it.

I have one regular GT and one superclocked GT and they both tops at 700/1000 with its stock cooler set at 40%. I don't see a reason to pay any money for super duper version, let alone dual-slot cooler. Might as well buy a GTS if you prefer dual-slot cooler. One of the big appeals of the GT was its form factor for me. And it's not loud at all - I don't know where the notion (GT is loud) is coming from?

The notion "GT is loud" comes from all those people that didn't like their card hitting 100 C so they increase the fan speed somewhere above 50%, and that is where the card starts being loud. Nvidia did a hell of a bad job with these 8800 GTs coolers.

yeah, that was the main reason I went with the 3870. Of course, that msi 8800gt OC card has the much improved dual slot cooling solution, PLUS it's very inexpensive. I haven't seen one in action, but judging by the numerous reviews it cools very well and is exceptionally quiet, too.

Only 20+ days remaining on my Step Up, so I'll probably miss out on the 9800GX2, so I'd like to get the 8800GT and add the Akimbo cooler to it. Hell, for $40 plus $12 for the Ste up, why not ?

Indeed, or their fan has no monitoring wire so it runs 100% full speed; seems a lot of the galaxy variants did that.

Too bad the site is backordered to hell and back..

plus...isn't it missing some Stream processors? 112 vs the 128 the 259 GTS has? Won't that put it at a disadvantage?
