I am assembling my 8400 rig right now. Everything is going okay. On anything besides 3D games, this is the bees knees. I am coming from an Athlon 64 3000 754 rig, night and day difference. I mainly bought this for my camera RAW conversions and Photoshop performance. However, a few games still interest me even after getting my xbox. (Can I finally run Flight Simulator X with decent FR's)

Here is my setup
Intel E8400
Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
PNY Nvidia 8500GT 512MB. (interim)
Patriot 2x2GB DDR2 800 memory
Cooler Master Real Power Pro 650W (thanks AT Hot Deals forum)

I am really interested in the evga 8600GTS, but their requirements on 12v rail are a tad high. 26 amps? I don't know as much as I used to, but when I was shopping for my Antec True Power 480 in what seems like eons ago, 26 amps was a bit of a rarity.
Should I just buy the card and fuggaditaboutit?

Nah, 26a is the recommended figure for your complete rig, including the videocard. Don't buy the 8600gts though, please ? I beg you :p Just buy a HD3850 or HD3870 instead. You'll pay 1.5 the price, but you'll many times the performance. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814103051 for example, 512mb of vram is recommended. If you check out other places then newegg, then you might find a 200$ HD3870 or so.

A 8600GTS will easily run on your power supply. It uses around 70 watts at load which is around 6 amps of 12v power. The 26 amp figure is for the total system power draw, but even that seems a bit high considering the reccomendation for the 8800gt which draws about 100 watts is only 22 amps

edit: too slow :p

ahhhh. Now I get it. Thanks for the tips. Now I have to think about the ATI card now? Great, more decisions for an indecisive guy. ;)

--edit--No matter what upgrade I take, is something like Driver Cleaner recommended still?

i think the reason they write 26amps on the 12v is to make sure people with CPUs like the pentium D 840 that sucks 12v power down like no tommorrow do not buy an 8600gts and it doesnt work.

the ATX 2.03 standard mandates 22 amps minimum on 12V even on250 watt psus though so i don tthink 26amps is that outlandish.

Update. Got the HD3850. Man, the Catalyst UI looks like butt. However, it does it's job, and the card is working great. Quiet too. I had to slap a Zalman on my old 6800GS.
