eVGA 7900GT OC CO Superclock with NV Silencer installed

Did you have to do anything special to get the RAMsinks and VF700 to all fit on the card? From pictures of the VF700, it seems to hang over the RAM modules.

I assume it's the back end (not fan end) that you have to hack off?

yup, if you hacked the front you would be cutting the fan in half. It is the end that faces the rear of the computer.

Nope, the heatsink's fins spread out above the heatsinks perfectly. The OCZ ones purportedly do a better job at cooling (because they're copper as opposed to aluminum) and they are actually not as tall as the ones that are provided with the VF700.

My eVGA 7900 GT superclock is on the fritz now (locks up while playing FarCry/FEAR in 20 seconds). I guess a few people are having problems too. The CSR I spoke too wasn't surprised...

Are the superclocks just too high? Just ordered teh 500mhz version, I'm hoping I don't have problems.
 
Out of curiosity what tool did you use to cut off the end of the cooler? Hacksaw or something a bit more ideal? I never have cut a video card cooler so kinda curious about best way to do it.
 
I've been trying to mount my silencer on my 7900 gt, but the plug seems to prevent the heatsink from sitting flush. How did you get around this problem? I read somewhere else that the plug "housing" has to be removed, but how would i do this?

Actually the tech said the memory was causing my problem.

I used a hacksaw with a fine tooth blade. (you could also use a dremmel) It doesn't need to be pretty. All the "dust" created by hacksawing it is noncondcuctive so it doesn't really matter what you use. The only PITA thing is holding it while cutting. If you put it in a vice you will probably break it.

I have a machine with a 6800GT AGP card overclocked to 400/1100. It used to reach around 95C on full load with the stock cooler, but recently the stock cooler became very noisy, as well as less effective, with the temps reaching 110C. So I got the NV Silencer 5 R3, and now my load temps don't even reach 60C, and the thing is very quite - it can't be heard over the machine's normal noise which is VERY LOW to begin with (Antec Sonata with 1 120 mm case fan, and a quiet thermaltake venus HSF for the CPU). Moreover it lowered my case temps because of exhausting the hot air outside. So the NV silencer is a great product, and is impressive to look at as well.
 
to the guy with the messed up card a few posts back: sadly a LOT of the 7900GT's are "going bad"....head over to the eVGA forums & see...im on my 2nd card now & am still testing to see if it's gonna be ok....using a Zalman VF700 as well...and it does appear to be ram related in some weird way, so DON'T OC the ram much if at all, or the card seemingly has a very high chance to fail 🙁 eVGA has fantastic customer support, though...
 
Need those pics, Red !! I just got notified that my Step Up is ready, so I packed up my 7800GT to be returned for a 7900GT SC unit for the princely sum of $12. I have yet to order the ram heatsinks or cooler, choosing to let you guys test the coolers until a majority settle on whats best for that particular card. Unfortunately, the SC cards are causing some issues as witnessed on the EVGA forums. I still don't want to mod it yet, even tho EVGA will cover the card regardless of the mods done to it (other than a blatant volt mod)
