Check the following thread out. If your SPP/MCP run relatively cool, then you may get by without a fan. But I do recommend using a fan (preferably not the one that comes with the board for lower noise) when using a tower heat sink.
I found this thread because I was looking into putting a "TRUE" (Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme) on my XFX 780i board as well... Thanks for the info. An important note about installing a TRUE and a NB fan mod is that your 60mm fan for the NB needs to be 60x60x15 or less. A 60x60x25 fan won't leave enough clearance for the TRUE.
Since this cost me an extra drive to Fry's for another 60mm fan, I figured I'd pass this on to help someone else.
