The other day I got an eVGA 7800GT to replace my x600 Pro card. So far I have played NFS Underground 2 and Halo and both games have frozen up during gameplay. When the freeze ups occur the whole system locks up for about 10 seconds or so and then everything resumes as normal. I was playing both games with all settings on high and at the native resolution of my 24 inch LCD whcih is 1920x1200. Typically the freeze ups occur about every half hour to hour but earlier when playing Halo, two freeze ups occured in less than a few minutes.
When the freeze ups occur, everything just totally locks up for about 5 seconds or so and then for about 5 seconds or so more until everything resumes as normal, the audio stutters.
My current machine has a 3.0GHz P4 Prescott, 512MB of PC4200 DDR2 RAM, and an Intel D915GEV mobo. I am using the current Forceware 80 drivers. The card is running at the 470/1100 stock speeds and is not overclocked, although Auto Overclocking is on in the Clock Frequency Settings option.
These are some of the things I suspect might be the cause:
-A defective card.
-Because neither game supports the 1920x1200 widescreen resolution I was forced to use a command line switch with Halo and a thrid party patch with NFSU 2 to achieve these high resolutions.
-Although I uninstalled the ATI drivers for my old x600 card and cleaned the registry there is possibly some remnant of the old ATI drivers left over and is confilcting with the nVidia drivers. I considered a format/reinstall of Windows but I decided to wait until next week when I build my new PC with an Opteron 170, an Asus A8N32-SLI mobo, and an additional eVGA 7800GT card.
-Not enough system RAM.
-System RAM errors. I plan to run Memtest later today.
Outside of the above I don't really know what the problem might be but hopefully someone here might have some more ideas.
I will say that both games ran smooth as silk without the slightest hiccup aside from the random freeze ups even though all settings were at thier max.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
