I am the proud owner of a 7800gt CO going on about 2.5 months. So I have a couple weeks to decide here.

What are you guys thinking? Is it worth doing the step up? Just wait for the true "next gen"?

I read that they give you credit for what you paid ($300 in my case), and they charge you the price on their site (MSRP which for the 7800gt CO is still $450).

Can someone clarify?

(side note, just got a pair of dell 19" trinitrons, man this card rocks! milkdrop at 3200x1200@85 8xAA16xAF with a 48x32grid!!!!!!!!!!!!)

I appreciate the quick response, lets look at other things besides "yes I want the new one."

What do we know about true costs in doing this "step up"?

I suppose finding out if its worth if from a performance stand point will come when benchmarks are available.

I would have stepped up with one of my cards, but my period expires three days before the 7900 line is suppoed to come out. :(

Yep, they give you what you paid and charge you the retail price for the card you want on they're website. Still awesome that you can upgrade like that though. Total step-up time average for me is usually less than 2 weeks. That includes shipping both ways. It usually only takes evga 2-3 days to process your step-up once they get your trade in card. I will be getting 1 7900GTX through step-up and possibly buying another for SLI.

I would say go ahead and use your step up if you feel the need to upgrade now. Just depends what you want I guess.

I'm sure the 7900GTX will crush a 7800GT even if the GTX is only 24pipes(which it probably is) instead of 32. It will probably be as fast as 2 7800GT's in some cases.

I have an EVGA 7800gtx/256 and had the oportunity to step up last week to a 7800gtx/512 but no thank you. I'll save my $250.00 (step up diff.) and put it towards a 7900gtx/512.

Who in thier right mind right now, would step up from a 7800gtx/256 to a 7800gtx/512?

Evga 7800gtx/512 = retail $699.00 (yes, it's still 699. retail on their site)
Evga step up shipping cost = $10.- 12.
Price I paid for 7800gtx/256 = $459.00

Price to step up = around $250.00 (half the price of a 7900gtx/512) **LMAO** No thanks!

Evga's step up program is very decent but with the arrival of the new ATI cards and the 7900's, it was just bad timing. I will though, continue to purchase EVGA cards :)

I feel sorry for all those people on EBAY trying to quickly dump their 7800gtx/512 cards **LMAO** What a shame.

If I bought my 7800GT's on 12/15/05. That means I have till 3/15/05 to step up, right?
(just want to make sure)

You have 90 days from the date of purchase. If they count 12/15 as one of the days, then you would have to do it by the 14th of March :)

Yeah, I'm going to wait until one delivers at least twice the performance I get with my 7800GT (which can barely power my 19" 1280x1024 in and of itself IMO). I've already got 2 GB of RAM (4 sticks :().

The Step-Up program could use some work. The prices on eVGA's site are ridiculous.

Fwiw,
is the step up program limited only to the top of the line cards, or is it for all cards ? I just bought a new 6800GS - and I'd be curious whether I would be eligible for a "step-up".

Your stupid mouth alright. Even if the 7900gtx/512 is $600.00, it would'nt be worth it to step up. Now go stick an ATI card in that mouth of yours and bite REEEEALY hard **LMAO**

The ENQUIRER:

European prices for 7900 GTX and 7900 GT emerge. To replace 7800 GTX, GT
By Fuad Abazovic: Thursday 23 February 2006, 11:13

WE got the latest prices of the upcoming Nvidia cards. The Geforce 7900 GTX 512 card is set to cost ?549 in Europe. Some partners, however, plan to price them higher. The guys like EVGA and BFG and partially XFX always like to price their cards more than the others.
We already reported that G71 looks like a die shrink of G70 and won't bring any miraculous features. It has 24 pipelines working at higher clock from 7800 GTX 512 speeds and that?s about it. Nvidia will be able to clock it to a 650MHz core and memory should work at 1600MHz.

The Geforce 7900 GT is set to cost around $299 in the US but Europeans will be able to buy this card for a more realistic ?329. It is close enough anyway, but I think that different partners will price them differently.

Both cards support SLI and will be showcased and launched at CeBIT. The cards should be available just after launch, we know that Nvidia is ready to ship some 7900 GTX at launch day - we heard that 7900 GT will be available a few weeks later. We could be wrong about.

From our shoes it looks like X1900 with its 48 shader pipelines looks like a performance leader, but it's still too early to say. µ

I dont think they are going to be fast enough for me to step up. I might but I dont see them having the capability to keep them in stock anyway.

If you go into EVGAs step up right now, they dont even offer the GTX512, its backordered. So thats a moot point.
Just the regular 256MB GTX and GTs.

I think this time the 7900GT wont be much faster than a 7800GT, and the 7900GTX will be a good percentage faster, enough to beat the X1900 and then some.

NV seems to have learned from selling 7800GTs that were so close to the GTX in performance that they've decided to try to do more to encourage people to make that extra jump.
I doubt I'll be upgrading till I need more firepower. Which prob wont be this gen.
