Current rig is in my sig.

How is the 7600 GS? Would I be able to max out BF2? (1280 x 1024)

I can currently play BF2 with all settings on high except for textures (medium) and AA on x2.

Hey-
my setup is as follows:

AMD Athlon64 3200+ @ 2.2 (s754)
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
2GB Kingston HyperX
XFX 7600GS 512mb (no OC)

im a stickler for the best FPS i can get, I keep the resolution at 1152x864 but turn everything on high. On the big servers it will lag slightly for a few minutes on round start but thats expected in BF2. Frankly I would suggest getting that other stick of ram boosting you to 2gb.. playing with your 6800 and see if you need that card upgrade.

I had a 6800 and 1gb setup running for a long time until my 6800 blew up. I suggest (this without getting a whole new pci-e system) getting both the video card and the 2gb ram boost.

it was an eVGA 6800 NU 128mb card that i had OC'd and had the pipes unlocked.. it started getting some bad artifacts and then would freeze the system up. Temp settings were ok, I think something just blew up on it.

Do you plan on upgrading your computer any time soon? If so you might as well wait until then and so you can upgrade to a PCI-E card.

Oh, I didnt know that. So is your PCI-E slot being used or not? A used 7900GT will got for about the same price as a 7600GS and you can max out BF2.

LOL. You're very observant.

I don't have anything in my PCIE slot. But I'm shying away from a pcie card because any card worth going in my next rig would require a new power supply over the one I have.

And if I do get the power supply and pcie card, then I might as well get a capable motherboard because ddr2 prices are so low right now, which defets the purpose of waiting for my next rig.

I might just get the 7600 gs to hold me over.

your reasoning is flawed imo. you can get more card for your $$ as a pci-e and better re-sale if you're going to be upgrading anyway. plus the step up program even depending on your upgrade timetable. buying agp when you can get pci-e makes no sense.

Agreed. What I dont understand is why you are so adamant about getting a new vid card now when you will be doing a complete overhaul a few months down the line, your just wasting money, and for what? A slight quality increase in BF2? Not worth it, just wait.

What PCIE cards can my psu handle?

Just throw out some options, but the main reason I'm looking at Best Buy is because of their generous return policy. Use for 30 days and return. If my psu can't handle the card or if my performance is not increased as much as I'd like, there is no need for RMA.

Upgrading in the next few months was an option if something in my life turned out. I'm on the waitlist for business school and if I get in, then I will defintely upgrade, but if not, then I have to prepare applications for next year's deadline which is 5 months away. And the last thing I need during this time is a distraction like playing games on an ultimate gaming machine.

My other option is to increase my RAM to 2 gigs. Worth it?

Then you'd be wasting your money. That card isn't enough of an improvement over your 6800.

Listen to the advice being given.

And I think your PCI-E slot is 4x. However, this would not hold you back significantly for the class of card you are considering. Add to that the fact that you could use any card you buy in a new system, it's a no-brainer.

Unless of course, you have no brains.

:D

Edit: I've just seen your idea to double your RAM. This would be a more sensible way to spend your $.

Definitely buy the RAM.

If BF2 is your main concern, 2gb will improve performance considerably, from all accounts I have heard. It is a memory hog. The 7600GS isn't much of an upgrade for you.
