evga 680i vs. everything else

I'm going to be building a new computer in october and i was thinking of the evga 680i mb, but now i see everyone talking about P35 and penryn cpus other chipsets. I've read the stickied motherboard topic and it seems that the evga 680i is good, but there are still some things i'm unsure of, such as is DDR3 support important? will it be in the near future? and will the Penryn processors be a big upgrade from the current C2Ds? any information or links to information would be greatly appreciated.
