Is this important? It says in the manual that it improves game performance, but I'd rather not have to reroute cables unless I have to (using an 8800GTX, which takes enough power itself...).

yes... My NF - 4 had the same input into the Mobo... and it was a good Idea as it assures enough power at the PCI-EG Slots.... It does seem like overkill I Know.
 
Better safe than sorry.U might as well plug it in.
And as far as i know u won't be losing much and the all pci-e cards draw power from the PSU and the pci-e slot.So its better if u plug it in.
 
Well, I ran 3DMark06 last night and got almost 10K 😀, so I doubt it makes much of a difference, but I'll try plugging it in a little later to see what happens.
