When I'm on my desktop, the nVidia utility reports 77C idle temperatures?!

I installed a Zalman GPU cooler 3 months ago, but I checked it out and it seems to still be tight and centered. I used AS5 thermal compound of course.

When I start a game, like WoW, it works for about 5 seconds, then turns all artifact-y and static-y. After that, the mouse doesn't respond on screen and the monitor stops recieving a signal and goes to standby mode. The computer itself is still on, and as far as I know, still functioning correctly. There are no troublecodes displays on the error LCD on the motherboard.

So, I assume that it is simply overheating and shutting off?

Let me know what you think ...

Check to make sure the cooling fan is still operational. Otherwise, what I think is your card is on its last leg!

The fan is operating and it is on the +12V setting. I need to find some AS5 to reset the heatsink, but alas, I forgot to bring it to Austin with me.

Anyone with spare AS5 want to mail me some? Really.

Mine had been idling around the 50s IIRC. It's been a while since I've had mine running though :( It died middle of last week, and I'm in the process of RMAing it. I'd hit up to the high 70s low 80s under full load. So I think yours is a bit unusually high. Have you dusted the HSF recently?

Yea, I have. And it is still idling at 77C. I'm not a novice at applying AS5 or at seating heatsinks/waterblocks. It is just sad!

I am thinking about building a C2D based computer and just upgrading everything -- GPU, RAM, ...
