Evga 6800 gt 256mb frame rate drops????

I have an evga 6800 gt 256 and I get random frame rate drops every minute or two from 60 fps to 6 or 7 fps then after about 3 seconds it goes back to normal. I also have the current drivers from nvidia.

My setup

Asus A8V
athlon 64 3500
corsair 1 gb pc3200
audigy 2 zs
evga 6800 gt 256
cable modem that gives me a steady ping of 58-60 on the server I use.

Perhaps you guys could help me out or direct me to a way to get into contact with nvidia as this problem is unnerving to say the least with a 400 $ video card.

Hmm...there could be several things wrong. Perhaps you simply have a defective card. Do you have any trouble on any other games with it? When Call of Duty is benchmarked, the 6800 GT runs it at over 100 fps, even with AA and AF turned on. Monitors can lock the frames at 60 though (I think it depends on the refresh rate). Is this only playing online? Do you have the same problem when you play the single player part of the game? Also, what brand did you buy, and how hot is it running? I may not be able to answer all your questions, but if you give a little more information, I am sure someone else on these forums would be able to. One last thing, I know this will probably insult you, but I have to ask, did you have a different brand of card before, and if so, did you COMPLETELY remove the drivers (uninstall and run a utility such as driver cleaner)? To me it sounds like a problem with your internet connection, that is IF you are refering to performance only in multiplayer mode.

It is a brand new system i built. Could a jump in ping from the connection cause a that kind of drop in frame rate? I'm gonna check single player right now

the same problem occurs in single player as well. I have an xoxide dracula case with 1 80mm fan and a 60mm fan on the side. Could it be a defective card?

it seems to happen only in call of duty though.

actually it is patched and i just checked unreal 2004 singlelayer and I also got the same Frame rate issue

should I return the card

also where can i download some diagnostic tools to check heat and such. my cd did not come with any.

I have never heard of Powerlab either. Maybe you should try swapping out power supplies once, maybe borrow a friends or something. a 350-430 should do. If it is happening in a cycle of 3 minutes, it seems unlikely that it is the card. One more question, have you overclocked anything?

man i thought everyboyd knew, you never go cheap on power supplies. Even tho its not a boast in performance it makes your pc run solid and stable.

Even my slow as stock p4 2.8 ghz 533 fsb doesnt not even drop. I have teh same card as you and i dont have those problmes at all playing ut2k4. I even had to oc my cpu because it was the bottleneck on my pc. These cards and pc components are very depmanding power wise, strap on a good psu and see if it fixes teh problem, they recommand a minium of a 350W btw

I think everyone cheaps out on the PSU their first build, it's so easy to do, but man you sure learn your lesson.

Go with namebrand (Antec, Enermax, Thermaltake), it'll save you so much headache.

I have something similar in SP COD with my 6800U in that the framerate drops significantly after I die and only a vid_restart cures it. Until I die again. This happens on 61.77 and a few of the beta drivers too.

Well teh 61.77 drivers are relatively old. I am sure it has to do with the drivers. I just moved over from ati to nvidia , i have one compliant that they do not update their drivers enough. I like how with ati even tho there isnt any performance gain they fix the bugs in the games caused by the graphic drivers almost monthly
