EVGA 670 GTX FTW crashing....

Ok, so some backstory. I purchased a EVGA 670 GTX FTW card 6-7 weeks ago now. When it arrived, I replaced my 260 GTX (216 core) with this card, and started experiencing a display that would randomly stop getting a signal. I went back and forth with EVGA tech support trying different things, and eventually they wanted me to test the card in another computer.

As I was in the process of purchasing essentially a new computer (motherboard, cpu, ram, video card, hard drive, case), I waited until all the parts arrived and built the new system, and tried the card in the new build, only to have the same problems. They then setup an RMA and I sent off the card to be replaced. Two weeks after I sent out the card, my replacement arrived (yesterday).

I open it up and notice 2 screws rolling around in the plastic shell/casing protecting the card during shipping and see the two holes where they came from, so I put them back in place. I then install the card, and Windows immediately crashes upon boot. I was able to get into safe mode fine and have no problems there, so I then suspect the only part which I did not change on my computer, the power-supply (even though it is a Corsair 750HX). Today I bought a Seasonic 1000W Platinum and finished installing it. I was able to boot into Windows now, and even was stable enough to try and start a game. Upon starting a game, I immediately started having the display drivers crash and recover over and over again until I was able to exit the game. So, it looks like I still have a bad card. I just contacted EVGA again about it, and I really don't know what they are going to do.

At this point, I suspect they have a problem with their board design, just like they did on their normal non FTW edition which they recalled. Doing some digging on google, and I am not the only one having this problem. I am also at the point where I simply want my money back. They had better upgrade me to a cross-ship RMA, as this is getting ridiculous for not having a working card 7 weeks after purchase...

One idea - try using a different cable type, say dvi or hdmi, whichever you're not using now. Also, what's the rest if your setup? Some people are talking about an incompatibility with z77 boards, although I haven't experienced it.

Ok, same problem different motherboard suggests it's probably the card. Try support again, I think they will cross ship given the history here.

One last thing you can try is to set PCI-E 3.0 down to 2.0. This has fixed unstability with many Gigabyte GTX 670/680 Windforce 3x, when in combination with Z77 and Ivybridge. I helped a friend of mine by doing this.

Well, given the screws that were out of their holes, EVGA is setting up another RMA. I'll try the PCI-E 3.0 -> 2.0 with the next card. EVGA was concerned about what else might have been damaged on the card in shipping since the screws were not there to hold it all together and were rattling around in there. What is strange that this newer card would have issues with PCI-E 3.0 while my older card does not (possibly because the old one negotiates at 2.0 speed, but the new one tries to use 3.0?)

But that doesn't explain why they failed to work on the other motherboard which doesn't support PCI-E 3.0.

Too bad. Just got 2 EVGA GTX 670 FTWs from Newegg and they run great in Rig 1. Incredible power for my 3 monitor setup.:)

Yeah, I have been really looking forward to the upgrade. Every review I have seen points me that this will meet my current needs for a while. I game at 1920x1200, and this card typically gets 60+ fps at that resolution with moderate to no AA (which I have never really used).

Every time I start thinking about going back to Nvidia, I find another one of these threads. Was considering the GTX670, but seems they even have problems with the GTX680 pcb. Not a chance im going to take.

And I need a GPU upgrade.

There are way more happy owners of gtx 670 cards than there are people complaining on forums. Check my Sig, no problems at all.

I was just going to post the same thing.

Hell, I have the short PCB that everyone hates and I have no problems at all. No heat issues, no strange noises.

I always like to point out that us here on forums are a minority and a majority of buyers just plug in, install drivers, and go with no troubles.

Yea that pretty much blows you're having all this trouble with the gpu OP. Knock on wood I haven't had any issues yet and I've had it for about a month. Although I will say my gaming hours have been drastically reduced since I got it due to RL stuff.

Just a follow-up. The new card arrived today. After installation, I was able to at least boot Windows and be stable without crashing (unlike the last card I had), and was even able to launch a game for a few minutes without the display going blank every few minutes (unlike the first card I had). I did have some stuttering issues with the machine itself (it wasn't just the graphics card).

So I took the suggestion of testing out disabling PCI-E 3x and setting 2x as the max, and that cleaned up all the issues. I am going to inform EVGA at least to let them know. I don't have an issue personally with only using 2x mode since we all know that 16x PCI-E 2x bandwidth is WELL more than what existing graphics cards can use (8X is fine). But I think they should at least be aware of the possible compatibility issues with 3x mode on this motherboard/cpu.
