I installed the 6600 GT with the EVGA drivers (downloaded from the website) and I was able to play Brothers in Arms/Far Cry/Medal of Honor no problem. When I tried to play Counter-Strike 1.6, it said something about Open GL being disabled and I had to download the latest drivers from Nvidia.com. I proceeded to download the latest drivers from Nvidia.com, installed, rebooted, and now my comp is very slow. My cpu usage constantly jumps around and my computer pauses for a second every three seconds.

I believe my problem is related to the fact that I have installed both Nvidia and Evga drivers installed on my computer. They are in folders with their respective names. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers from the control panel but the EVGA drivers were not listed. I also deleted both the Nvidia and Evga folders and disabled the drivers for my Display Adapter in the Device Manager. I ran Driver Cleaner Pro to remove everything Nvidia and it worked to no avail. After reinstalling and later deleting the Nvidia and Evga drivers (not at the same time of course), I still get a laggy cpu.

Now I'm sitting here, driverless, and I still have the pauses. What should I do short of reformatting?

Um. You refuse to learn your lesson? You actually downloded outdated drivers from eVGA. So reformat, reinstall and download the latest Forceware. Lesson learned, problem solved.

I don't see why I would need to since it is a last resort. I'm now running it in safe mode with networking enabled and everything is perfect. But if I boot up normally, I still get that skipping problem

Did you run Driver cleaner (think that is what it is called, google it)? It is generally a bad idea to just install drivers over one another. Often just uninstalling them is not enough. Are youdoing any OCing or anything? I assume your temps are fine. If all else fails, you will have to reformat. Hopefully you have an old Hard drive around you can back up on... I would never recommend installing drivers off the CD. They are often severely outdated.

I ran Driver Cleaner in safe mode but I still have the problem if I boot up normally. I've been running my p4/mobo for 3 years problem free. The problem only started after I stupidly installed two drivers.

It works fine (without any of the pausing) in safe mode. So if I ghost my C: and reformat, I'll still have the problem right?

If you just backup the whole drive, all the problems will still be there. You will have tobackup all the important data on the drive and then format, reinstall windows and all your programs. This is one reason it is good to have the OS on its oiwn partition...

Yup, I have 3 partitions and C: just contains Windows and some windows utilities.

But the most wonderful thing happened! I was randomly installing/uninstalling random drivers but I accidentally clicked on "shut down" instead of "restart". When I turned my computer back on, it booted normally! Woot!

Weird... does anyone have a reason for this?
