So my old EVGA X58 board died and I returned it to EVGA for warranty and I guess they don't have any more replacement X58 boards and won't be anticipating getting any in the future. So they offered me three options:

1) 140-SS-E177-KR – Z170 FTW
or
2) 151-HE-E999-KR – X99 Classified
or
3) $80 refund.

I've been out of the loop in computers since my X58 build.. Can you give me an idea of what would be best? I've bee thinking of just buying an x58 board from ebay since the CPU and ram are still good. But I've also been thinking of building another more up to date computer and using the x58 for backup. what do you guys think?

Thank you!

The X99 board is the most expensive, so you could either get a good deal on a 5820k if you are near a Microcenter or Fry's, and if not you could just sell it and get the most $$ from it.

Skylake is largely a disappointment over previous generations. It's not bad by any means, but a 5820k will hold it's on against the 6700k unless you get a good overclock-able chip, then Skylake will be slightly ahead.

X99 is the descendant of X58 and the most logical choice, as well as the most valuable.

It is EATX, though, so have a case that will accomodate it, or sell it.

Definitely the X99 Classified

Nah let it go, no point in flogging a dead horse :D

If you do need, or want, two systems then I suggest getting a cheap(er) backup albeit based on a more recent platform. AMD or Intel, that's up to you but I wouldn't want anything much older than 2014.

Lastly if you do get the backup system up & running, I suggest waiting for Broadwell-E as that'll be a better upgrade for the X99 than the current crop of Haswell-E chips.

Thank you all for your replies.. I went and ordered the X99 board. If I can find a CPU cheap enough for this I may keep it and play around with overclocking it.

I voted for the wrong one. I meant x99 not z170 so ignore that vote. I see you've solved it already though. :p
