EVGA 1000w P2 - Keep or Sell?

I've been out of the computer game for a while, my build was back in 2012 and still working OK. It was a budget build at the time. I've upgraded some components as I went, but it's still a lower end PC.

The key components are:

FX6300 (Not OC'ed ATM, not sure if that's wise given my MB)
Asus M5A97 R2.0
R9-270X
Antec NeoEco 620w PSU

I started looking at Newegg's BF ads and came across the EVGA Supernova P2 1000w powersupply. I'll admit I fell prey to the "hey, I can get a massive, well reviewed PSU for $100!" and bought it. My brain had more rational thoughts a few hours later and I tried to cancel it, but it was already shipped.

Even if I were to slap an 8 core FX and an R9 390 in my machine, (which I might do soon) I think the PSU would still be in the range of overkill. My current plan is to sell it, and at least get my $$ back and probably a little more. But it's sitting here on my desk tempting me. There's a little voice in the back of my head whispering "It was a great deal, why not use it".

So here I am. Looking for enablers. :D I think any case I put together for keeping this thing is pretty weak, but my computer knowledge is somewhat limited and definitely 3-4 years out of date. Any thoughts/comments? The $100 I spent isn't going to break me, so let's just focus on the merits of this PSU vs. my current one.

(p.s. I've self flagellated myself plenty about this purchase, but feel free to pile on if you must.....)

No merits. The NeoECO 620 is already a decently beefy 620 continuous wattage PSU (I use a couple of them here and there for various builds with OCed 2500Ks + 290X).

well.. the P2 is a work of art. i myself have the 1kw G2 and i run 2xSSD, a AIO, 4670k OC and 770. i still get around 91% efficiency at my wattage.

Well, the P2 is a much nicer PSU. Really though, for most of the time when your system is idling it's not likely to be that much more efficient than your current 620W Bronze model. It's just way more PSU than your system needs, and you'll be running most of the time at <10% load.

I would do what I usually do. Put the 1000P2 box on a shelf, pull the NeoEco out, and replace it with a 650W Supernove P2. :)

I have the 1200watt P2, I love the P2 as they're really built well AND the fan hardly ever comes on except when I'm gaming. If you have the money to burn I'd keep it as it's very efficient even at low loads.

even at 200w the efficiency is 90%

9.5 value score when this unit was priced $200 !!

10 year warranty!!

man, this is the PSU-for-life.

Yeah, but his idle won't be 200W.
51143.png

That's with a 990FX Crosshair Formula V, and either a GTX 580 or HD5870, so his idle is likely to be even lower.

Down at 100W, the 1000P2 gets 85.8% efficiency, which is still good for a 10% load. Down in the 60W range that's likely to be even worse. That's the problem with spending big bucks on a huge PSU for a system that even at max only draws a few hundred watts. He'd really be able to run with a 400W supply without any problem at all. A smaller PSU will have lower 10% efficiency, but at that point his idle will start being closer to the 20% range.

I did something similar a few years back. I bought an ABS (one of Newegg's house brands) PSU, a 1050W Silver PSU. It was half price, $130 instead of $260. I thought, "Wow, what a great deal!". I guess it was a closeout, as they stopped carrying that model.

But, honestly? Pure overkill. It's been sitting on the shelf for a couple of years.

Edit: It was a rebranded Enermax MaxRevo or something like that. It was a well-reviewed PSU.

Then again OP, don't blame you. When I managed to snag a couple of BFG EX-1000s for ~$50 a piece, you bet your a*s that I did :p

The modern high quality Gold/Platinum PSUs (Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, Enermax, etc.) are built like tanks. The old method of leaving headroom to not run them close to max doesn't apply to these bad boys. If it's rated at 1000W Platinum, it can handle1150-1200 at the wall easy.

Have you considered the option of selling your 620W Neo for $35, while keeping the EVGA P2?

The reason the P2 1000W is so epic is not only because it's a platinum PSU but also because of this:

fan_noise.jpg

If you sell your existing PSU for $35, that's only $65 to own one of the best, if not the best Platinum PSUs in the world that comes with a 10-year-warranty, is completely fanless for any modern i7 OC +250W TDP OC flagship GPU rig and it's modular to help with cable management/case airflow/look.

If I were in your shoes, I'd sell the Antec Neo and keep the EVGA P2 just because I would know it's a $70-80 PSU out of pocket after selling the Neo that will last and last, whiel being noiseless and providing ridiculously stable power and upgrade path for anything you want. :D If you need the $ though for other things, you can sell it since you can use $100 towards a FX9590 CPU upgrade once they are $99-120 after Zen launches hehe.

This one? That is an excellent PSU. Monster PSU.

"Powers my 3x GTX 480's in triple SLI, 2 custom water cooling loops, 2 SSD's, 2 Velociraptors, 1 Bluray drive, 10 Fans, and 2 dual cold cathode kits with ease."

"Its single +12V rail with massive 87A for a total 1044W of continuous power should provide enough power for anything you wish to throw at it. The +12V rail dropped only 0.04V under our maximum load of 750W."

At least both of you bought awesome PSUs not overpriced junk with a marketing name ;)

What about noise levels? I bet this ABS would be quieter than your existing PSU. If you aren't using it, might as well sell it. Your PSU is very top notch and it shouldn't be hard to resell such an excellent unit if it's brand new.

Has anyone ever said you are a silver tongued devil? :)

Anyway....thanks to everyone for their input. I think I've figured out an approach. Sometimes in life, ridiculous amounts of overkill aren't the end of the world and this is probably one. Especially since I got it bought for a great price, and it's sitting here already.

I don't know exactly where my upgrade path will take me, given the current state of AMD products, but I guess I'll be able to sleep at night knowing that my PSU can take whatever I throw at it.

Yep, that's the one. Nice detective work. I should probably sell it, I'm not going to run triple CF or SLI any time soon that I know of. It's not new though. Not sure what I could fetch for it. Something to consider, I guess.

Keep the P2 it's amazing. I just bought one last week for $200 AR, or a lot more than what you paid (Canada eh!) and that was as low as this unit has ever been here.

The P2 1000 is IMHO the best 1000W power supply available. Sure it's overkill but the Platinum rating takes care of the efficiency concerns at lower wattages, a difference of 5 watts when idling vs. a quality 600W Platinum unit make no difference and the switch on the back of the unit for "Eco" mode is genius. The fan only turns on after I think 400 or 450W so it's DEAD silent.

Just make sure you register your unit so you ensure you get the 10 year warranty and upload your receipt to EVGA as receipts today are like disappearing ink after a year or two.

Keep it, all Japanese caps, ball bearing fan, super solid construction and 10 year warranty for the price you paid?

Pfft..
