Clean install of 98se. Aopen 810 based mobo. Installed intel 810 video drivers, soundmax audio ac 97 and motorola sm56 speakerphone modem drivers. Now when I reboot the add new hardware comes up and wants to install an unknown device. Continuing shows that it's the modem which was the last thing installed. Any idea why it wants to keep installing an unknown device? Keeps doing it.

Thanks, any help appreciated, Mac

Chances are that the "unknown devices" are related to the chipset.
Have you installed the Intel chipset drivers?

Dled the audio and video driver from Aopen. Also installed a Mororola modem.
Chipset is an 810L. DLed and ran the program to see make 98se see the intel chipset. Said didn't need an update, everything was ok.

Does the board have an INFARED Port that is not detected and conflicting
with the Modem?

Maybe its looking for the speakerphone driver -- anyhow, I think your software modem should have 2 entries in the device mgr: 1)HCFModem (which is a modem enumerator) and 2)Modem. If you don't have both then the HCFModem is probably what it's looking for.

Turned out to be an update inf that let 98se see the chipset and it seemed to install a bunch of drivers. Like a PCI bridge.
Thanks for the interest.
