Everything's Wrong - CD, Mobo, and IRQ problems

Well, I've successfully reduced this computer from fully operational (this morning) to pile of junk (right now), and I don't even know how I did it.

1 - My CD-ROM drive, the one that I was installing things off just this morning, now refuses to read. I can see the files ok, but any attempts to run any EXEs from the disc results in some sort of windows error (page faults, CRC failures, you name it, I've seen it) I seriously need some help on this one. Burned discs, CD-RWs, pressed discs, none of them read. This happened after I switch off DMA in my IDE settings - but didn't return to normal after I flipped them back. The drive is a Yamaha CRW8424E, but I haven't installed any burning software for it, seeing as how I just came out of a fresh reformat. It is using standard Win2K drivers.

2 - My motherboard. So, I think, maybe this problem could be fixed by updating the mobo BIOS. Nope. Any attempts on running the flash proggie brings up the grim message:

"Error 18 - Chipset/Flash part isn't available. The function will be invalid
DOS/4G error (2001): exception 0Dh (general protection fault) at 37F:01DA7D90
TSF32: prev_tsf32 81C4
SS..." and goes on. Great, now I can't flash my BIOS.

BTW, I have a GigaByte Socket 370 6VX7-1394

3 - Video card. I have a Radeon 8500, and it skips frames. Horribly. Runs for 3 seconds, skips for half a second - makes any game completely unplayable. I'm running the latest official drivers, and apparently a lot of people experience the problem - though nobody's figured out a fix for it. I've tried every official and beta driver ATI has ever released for the R8500, all of them have the same problem.

4 - IRQ. Yes, I'm aware that IRQ sharing is normal, but I seriously doubt it's a good thing when 6 devices are assigned to IRQ 9. This includes my sound card and video card (which reportedly is causing the instabilities in my system, go figure), my firewire controller, ACPI, and two instances of the USB driver (wtf?). Win2K won't let me manually reassign IRQs, what with ACPI and all, so I'm stuck like a dead fish in a barrel.

Help!

Go down to the Basement and pickup that nice shiny new hammer and ......... 😀 heh J/K

Most of your problems could be related to the motherboard , have you checked all your bios settings and make sure they are default ? Are you overclocking at all ?

When you decided to upgrade the bios , in what fashion did you try to flash it ? With a floppy disk or direct from desktop ?

ACPI shouldn't be an issue except for reduced performance from your video card regarding frame rates , you can turn off ACPI if your bios allows it or you can change either when installing Win2k/XP by pressing F7 when it prompts you for a raid driver (F6) instead and select Standard PC or by changing the driver in the device manager .

Please read the FAQ: Why are all my devices using one IRQ in Win2K?

Do NOT change the device driver from the device manager, as this will seriously stuff up the system's plug and play. Same goes for turning off ACPI from the BIOS without a reinstall.

As far as ACPI itself goes, please read the FAQ: ACPI vs APM.

You appear to have a VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset based board. Make sure that you have the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers installed, with the AGP GART in turbo mode.
