Move over Texas!

Ant Financial, a Chinese financial services group founded by Alibaba’s Jack Ma, is big enough that Chinese authorities are putting new limits on what the company can do.

[...]

With $8.8 trillion in annual payment transaction volume, it’s bigger than Mastercard ($5.2 trillion), with 620 million online payment active users it’s bigger than PayPal (244 million), with a $219 billion in its largest money market fund it’s bigger than JPMorgan’s $134 billion U.S. Government fund and it’s got more credit scores than FICO.

Even appetites!

Fueled by rising incomes rather than urbanization, meat consumption in China grew sevenfold over the last three decades and a half. In the early 1980s, when the population was still under one billion, the average Chinese person ate around 30 pounds of meat per year. Today, with an additional 380 million people, it’s nearly 140 pounds. On the whole, the country consumes 28 percent of the world’s meat — twice as much as the United States. And the figure is only set to increase.

In so many ways, China is the new America . . . fueled simply by the size of its market and the economic power behind that, it is becoming the economic gorilla of the world. We won WWII basically because of our industrial might, as "the arsenal of democracy."

I, for one, welcome our new Chinese overlords. ;)

Now excuse me while I'm off to my Mandarin class.

You know what's funny? They are only consuming twice as much meat as Americans while having four times the population. And Trump decided he doesn't want that market

It's a good thing, actually. American meat production practices are already environmentally unsustainable. If we were to scale that to meet Chinese demand, it would just be unfathomably destructive.

With that said, there are ways to raise cattle, chickens, etc and such that is environmentally sustainable, but the cost is much higher. Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms has a really amazing and environmentally sustainable farm in Virginia. My parents bought some of his beef and said it was some of the best tasting beef they ever had. But, it was expensive haha.

Agreed. Worse, Chinese people eat everything. If it moves, its food. Also, they have a huge desire for things that the west generally has cast aside. A ton of black market animal goods go to China and its getting worse.

If people think that Americans are wasteful and glutinous, they better get ready for China.

How's that socialism working out for them? I'm sure everyone is equal their right? Everyone getting the same check in the mail every week?

Actually, that is kind of good in a way. They will eat all of the animal while Americans will throw much of it away. Just need to start using more sustainable practices with raising animals.

Id say its going pretty well, considering they just achieved universal health coverage in 2011... 1.3 billion people.

Of course the other part of that is that they move towards having more capitalism.

You see, only stupid right wingers in this country can't seem to grasp that adding elements of democratic socialism doesn't mean that you are in turn trying to turn the country into "the same check in the mail every week." for everyone. Progressives in this country almost unanimously want the same thing. Government run healthcare instead of being gouged by private insurance companies, and possibly free higher level public education. Thats it. Nobody is calling for the type of government that you like to make into a strawman. If we didn't strive to spend every federal dollar we have on our military, and didn't have so many stupid Republicans in government who supported spending twice as much money lining insurance company pockets, we could easily have those things.

.... oh the irony. You're the one making a strawman.

I had no indication of implying that elements of socialist support is a hindrance. Just that simply an entire socialist government where everything is state owned is not a model anyone should think is the correct action for a sustainable economy.

Eating monkey meat is a very bad idea.

I think meat is too cheap. But meat industry wants it that way so they try all they can to keep cost low.
