not sure what happened, but was typing up a letter on my pc and everything froze up on me. couldnt even ctrl/alt/delete the darn thing. had to turn off manually, then, ....nothing.....
i could see my leds on, but there was nothing on my monitor.
tryed several times but nothing. i tryed sawpping 3d cards, memeroy, and hard drives and still nothing.
just black...
did my mobo go bad? my cpu? my agp slot?
and yes i tryed a diff monitor.

it just seems odd to me that any of those might have gone bad, cause there only a year old, and its all good stuff and i never oc anything.

P4 2.8 ghz 800FSB
GIGABYTE MOBO P4 TITAN SERIES 875P #GA-81K 1100
9600XT 128MB
120 GB WD
1GB DUAL CHANNEL DDR3200
WIN XP

COULD A VIRUS DO THIS, OR IS IT ONE OF THE THREE THINGS I LISTED?

oops caps

thanks

I doubt that a virus did this. What of the state of the rest of the box? psu, cpu, northbridge fans on? Which leds - power, hd, numlock, nic, mb? Is Windows set to play a startup sound, do you hear it?

psu,all fans, all leds all in working order, and no sound from pc,and yes,its set up to do so.

i dought its anything other than my mobo or cpu, just wish i knew which one and what made it retire at an early age. :(

This might sound like overkill, but...

I'd prolly pull the d@m mobo and place it on a phonebook with only cpu (+HSF), ram and vid card. Hook up the mouse, KB and monitor and have a go.

If your mobo has some diagnostics (LEDs or beeps), look/listen. If it wont boot stripped down, pull the cpu or ram and see if it gives the proper beep or whatever.

If you cant get the proper beep code out of it I'd bet the mobo went north (I'm from the South, so when things fusk up, I say they went 'North" :) ).

I agree with Fern, except before I'd take those drastic measures I'd go 'minimum config' inside the box. Unplug everything you don't actually need to boot. adapters, cd drives, floppy, etc.

Get down to just the PS, MB, CPU, minimum memory, hard drive, keyboard, mouse and display. Hell, if you've got a bootable cd or disk you could also eliminate the HD and OS.

Even top of the line components crap out and more often than not this occurs within the first 2/3 months. You say you've been up for a year so the burn in is over.

If you still can't boot in Min Config you can swap a different memory stick to eliminate that. Then you are down to the PS, MB or CPU. Try the PS first (cheapest). You can test the Keyboard, Mouse and Display on another system (which I assume you have access to since you posted).

try resetting the bios (unplug psu, take out battery, let it sit for a while. while it is running, borrow somebody's multimeter and check voltages
