How do I disable ACPI or whatever its called? and after thats disabled do the IRQ's arrange themselves or do I have to do it??

One more question: is Win2k like linux where you have to have 2 different logins: Adminstrator for all system changes and User for all the regular stuff? or is it like Win98 where you can just start up and do everything you want

You can disable ACPI by turning it off in the BIOS. This should work, but I'm sure there are much more details that I am not aware of.

In Win2k, there can be just the admin account if you want. You can always add more if you'd like with restrictions for security reasons. But, you don't NEED to do this.. it is just recommended.

If you want to manually assign IRQs, or just let Windows do it properly, you have to change the ACPI mode HAL to Standard PC HAL.

To do this, go into Device Manager, and look under Computer. It should say Advanced Configuration Power Interface PC. Change this to Standard PC by changing the driver. Then reboot. Hopefully it should come out OK.

If you need to reinstall, hit F6 while it is detecting all the devices right at the very beginning to manually select the Standard PC HAL. You may also need to turn ACPI off in the BIOS if you have that option.

here is the article from Microsoft dealing with it.

Win2K can quite happily get along with just one account for everything...the Administrator's account. You can create as many accounts as you want and assign it certain rights, or you can use the particular groups that Win2K already has, such as Power User.

Just a clarification, the proper way to select Standard PC HAL when reinstalling is by hitting F5 when you receive the prompt "Press F6 to install additional SCSI or RAID drivers". A separate dialog will pop up where you can select the HAL type.

No need to disable ACPI in the BIOS if you force a particular HAL when installing.

Best regards,

changing the acpi/standard computer setting AFTER installation has always screwed me up. i tried it twice. only choosing it with F5 BEFORE installation worked for me.

i didn't want mine to share irq's, but i gave up trying. i got it to work, but i wasn't happy with a result of getting it TO work. some other error, i forget. it was last year. now, i have like 6 things on irq 11, with 2,3,5,7, & 10 all free and available.

it works just fine, so i blew it off.

oh, about the accounts

only log on as administrator to do system things. for everyday use make yourself an account as a power user. this is the practice recommended by microsoft. and quite often, too. they say it helps against trojans and such.

edit

you can run all the time as admin, the system won't care. it's just safer not to.

I too have several devices on IRQ 11, one of them being my AGP video card. This is a new install of W2K.
Does this sound like something I should fix? Thanks.

Search the forum for the Win2K Tips and Tricks thread. There is a detailed explanation of how to change the IRQs after installation. Works like a champ too. :)

I gotta try that F5 trick tonight. I couldn't get the Standard PC config to work after the install, but if its works before the install begins, then sign me up.

I got the standard PC trick to work after install. However I still have a couple of things sharing the same IRQ's. How do I go about changing that?

You probably need to change the IRQ settings in the BIOS. Standard PC configuration reads the settings directly from the BIOS.

Setaanbomb is right, you should set your IRQ's in the motherboard's BIOS. But keep in mind there are some devices which will share an IRQ no matter what. For example, the AGP and first PCI slots usually share an IRQ, and USB is often piggybacked on the modem's IRQ.

HEY FLOYD! If you would please see my post in OS "Win2K Disk I/O error NTDETECT failed." The post is related to this subject in that after I chose Standard PC and then(unrelated) was unable to change the primary partition to FAT32 and so reformatted I am now unable to use my startup disks, getting the above error message shortly after booting with the Startup disk. I don't want to screw things up any more than I have so I've been searching Microsoft for a course of action. Seems like I will get 2 free support calls so I'm trying to get more insight into what the message means and what to do. Thanks.
