Everyone who rents...BUY RENTERS INSURANCE!!

With the threads that keep popping up about apartment/house burglaries, I thought I'd post this message. If you rent and you don't have renters insurance, go see an insurance agent tomorrow and pick some up. For anywhere from $10-20 per month, you can have enough coverage to give you some piece of mind and to give you recourse if someone crackhead breaks into your apartment and steals your electronics and whatever else is handy. If you are younger, you MAY be covered by your parents' home owners insurance, but you need to make sure.

I think we pay about $20/month for $35,000 in coverage with a $500 deductible. Well worth the comfort in knowing that we're not stuck with several thousands of dollars of missing possessions if someone breaks in.

This has been a public service announcement.

yup for me its like $28 per $26K insurance. I live in the city, the rates are a little higher. I also have active security but this stuff covers fire/disaster/flood too!

I rent a house at school. I thought that my parents homeowners insurance would cover theft??? Does anyone know?

Trust me guys, this is important. I had a place burn down 3 days after I signed the papers for the lease.

I was literally coming in with a 3rd carload of stuff when I saw that suddenly we had a 1100 square foot skylight in our apartment. 🙁 Took me almost a year to recover from that.

What about places that already have liability insurance? I KNOW that insurance doesn't cover your belongings, but is it not possible to JUST cover your possessions with renter's insurance, since the liability is already covered? Getting full renter's insurance would be double-insuring the place, which, if I'm not mistaken, is not even legal?
