Newt is a nasty and evil human being as a politician. In the mid 90s when Susan Smith drowned her 2 kids he blamed it on Democrats.

Newt could easily use it to his advantage. He could say something along the lines of "I did wrong, I was punished, I learned from it. I lost sight of what was important and the wake up call was heeded."

Just like with Clinton and Monica. After his initial "I did not have..." statement, he should have come back out and fessed up. If he came out later and said "I am sorry, I lied before. I was taken by surprise and naturally I was scared. I lied out of worry over my wife. I am sure you all understand. I have to come clean and apologize for the lie. My fellow countrymen deserve better. Now please let my family and I work this out in private."

I think most people would have applauded him doing that...if nothing else they would have understood why he initially lied and maybe even empathized with him. He would have never lied under oath and never been imeached.

Never underestimate the desire of Americans to forgive and to allow people to learn from their mistakes provided they admit they messed up. As a whole, we are a very good people (on both sides of the isle).

I actually have started liking Gingrich a lot lately. Yes, he's undisciplined and erratic, but at the same time he's creative and has a way of reframing debates. He is very much like Bill Clinton in that regard.

but most importantly, if you listen to Gingrich go on the Glen Beck show, here's the crazy thing: he makes a LIBERAL argument for the necessity of regulation -- and he gets away with it. On Glenn Beck.

The biggest thing I like about him is that he comes from the old school days of compromise. Compromise on both sides is needed.

I agree with you there. Of course, given the current political climate and his willingness to make fundamental policy shifts based on money and politics, I don't have a high level of confidence that he would take the same approach today as he did in the mid-90s.

I suspect it's academic anyway, because I think it's unlikely he will be nominated and even more unlikely he would beat President Obama in a general election, but one never knows.

I'm thinking there's a very good chance he will be nominated. For one thing, his candor and the fact that he's not always guarded is actually refreshing compared to Romney who is always evasive.

but he would lose to Obama. Oh yeah.
