everyone is tweeting their salary with #talkpay

700k as an engineer? That seems very inflated but if 10+ people from there say it is I'm inclined to believe but it sounds more like a fisherman's story.

For google? Have you seen what has happened in the bay area housing costs due to silicon valley? It's definitely in line.

What you make in a year includes everything, thus it is plausible that the $700k includes his/her stock, stock options, bonus, and salary. Most stock options are restricted and not "liquid." I'd like to know the salaries. I'm betting in the $180k - $220k for top Engineers, which is a shit ton of cash, but it's not a $700k salary plus stock, bonus, vacation, and so forth. That is executive salary, even in the Bay Area. In my opinion.

I was raised to not talk about what you make, as it changes friendships, family relationships, and so forth.

Exactly Gen X here ... I know the salaries of a lot of the engineers here ... These people are full of shit ... seriously.

Engineers, working as engineers, do not earn 700k. Sometimes somebody will have an engineering degree and be put in a position that pays 700k, that is not the same thing as being payed 700k salary as an engineer.

EDIT: If you are to believe this twitter tag, all you need to do is pay $1200 local state school tuition for 4 years to get a CS degree and suddenly every company will be fighting to pay you 150k plus options. Good luck with that.

also i learned from #talkpay that if you are at a job without stock options or a job that is not in san francisco, then everyone there thinks you are dumb

I know a recent grad who would reject offers like that if he didn't like the interviewer's teeth or if the local dance scene wasn't legit.

yeah that's what it sounds like. someone tweeted they knew someone who rejected 250$k just because they didnt like something minor with the interview

part of me thinks i am stupid for not getting in on that big money action

though i bet most of these places dont have pensions, and mine are looking to have payout of a couple million over 20 years when i get to retirement age

dang, new grads making 150$k + 50$k in stock options right out of college with a BS CS

The best guys in engineering can top 100k in the right market just out of school, but the vast majority fall below that mark. Most schools publish stats, you can go view them yourself. I feel lucky to have hit 80K starting next month.

Obviously exceptions exist, I know a guy from my hometown who dropped out after 1 year of a CS program and was making 6 figures the next year. Probably the best programmer I've ever met though, YMMV.

Shows what they know. People living in San Francisco are the dumb ones.

Making 700K in SF is like poverty level in other areas amirite? :colbert:
